Career Objectives:

Having spent the last 10 years at one of the best universities, medical schools, and academic medical centers in the region imparted in me the desire to want to be part of a big group of scholars. In particular, what appealed to me the most is the multidisciplinary approach and care towards the patient. Furthermore, being significantly involved in experimental, translational, and clinical research during my undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate years, respectively, helped me think more like a scientist, attempting to address the questions that haven't been answered and applying them in challenging patient encounters.

During my fellowship training, I intend to maximize my exposure to all what the training program has to offer. My work philosophy is F.I.L.O. which stands for First In, Last Out. I want to acquire all the soft and hard skills the fellowship program has to offer, as well as gain enough medical and surgical experience to be autonomous by the end of the training. I would also like to continue working in clinical research, hopefully culminating in high-impact publications within the field. Equally as important as the aforementioned is building networks with peers, colleagues, and professionals, to communicate and coordinate care across territories, which is essential in today's connected world.

Lebanon, despite its small population, counts about 300 ophthalmologists, with 6-7 ophthalmologists graduating every year across all residency programs in the country. This is a huge number for a country with a population of some 6,000,000 individuals. However, those numbers are very unevenly distributed. In fact, all the major eye centers are located within the Greater Beirut Area, which is less than 5% the total surface area of the country. Also, most of the practicing ophthalmologists outside these eye centers also have their clinics in the Greater Beirut Area. This discrepancy leaves other governorates in Lebanon underserved in terms of comprehensive eye care services.
In addition, the complexity of ocular pathologies is increasing, particularly secondary to trauma or complicated surgeries. This creates a demand for advanced surgical techniques and skills, only achieved through vitreoretinal or advanced anterior segment surgical training. Unfortunately, out of those 300 ophthalmologists, less than 10 have received such formal training.

Given all the above, my career objectives are manifold:
1. Acquire and apply advanced surgical training in vitreoretinal surgery through exposure to a heavy surgical load of regular and complex cases, using various techniques and approaches, and integrating old and new technologies.
2. Help teach those skills to fellow ophthalmologists and vitreoretinal surgeons who might not have had exposure to them.
3. Coordinate care through the personal and professional networks built during my subspecialty training.
4. Work in an academic center, where I can have a balance between clinical, surgical, and academic work through research and teaching.
5. Concurrently establish an eye center or group practice in one of the underserved areas in the country, gathering optometrists and ophthalmologists from different subspecialties to provide comprehensive quality ophthalmologic care.
6. Continue working with NGOs to provide ophthalmic care to the severely underserved and vulnerable populations (refugee or other).
