I am Dr. Nancy Magdalene from India and I take pleasure in applying for a vitreoretinal fellowship.

To brief you about myself, I started my career in ophthalmology in 2005 immediately after my undergraduate training and I was lucky enough to be posted in the department of retina in the reputed Joseph Eye hospital Tamilnadu India for 2 years. My mentor Dr. Amjad Salman taught me the art of indirect ophthalmoscopy, retinal lasers and fundus fluorescein angiography. Working side by side with him and under his able guidance, my focus gradually shifted from being a microbiologist to an ophthalmologist.

I underwent further specialist training in ophthalmology for 4 years (2 years of Diploma and 2 years of Masters in Ophthalmology) in Christian medical college Vellore. During this period I have managed the Ophthalmology outpatient independently, performed manual small incision cataract surgeries and phacoemulsification, surgically managed ocular trauma, performed diabetic lasers and retinal barrage lasers. I have assisted a good number of vitreoretinal surgeries. My obsession to localize the break in a patient with retinal detachment was well known to all my professors and colleagues. I also love to teach and I have conducted bedside rounds with my junior residents every evening after the outpatient clinic hours. After my Masters I continued to work as a senior resident in the department when I conducted weekly Diabetic retinopathy screening camps on a community basis and lasers were administered based on the requirement. My passion for retina has made me pursue a 2-year vitreoretinal fellowship in Aravind Eye Hospital Madurai, which commenced on 2nd January 2017. I am currently 7 months into the fellowship and am managing the retina outpatient clinic, administering intravitreal injections and fine tuning my laser skills. I attend the retina operating theatre once a week where I assist a variety of 3D vitreoretinal surgeries. I have started performing minor procedures like port insertions, 23G silicon oil removals and endolasers. My curriculum here includes training in diabetic vitrectomy, primary vitrectomy and scleral buckling in retinal detachments, Retinopathy of prematurity identification and management and of course all varieties of retinal lasers. I am expected to independently perform the above surgeries by the end of my fellowship.

There is a dearth of retinal surgeons at my hometown in India. Thus I would like to be surgically strong and be independent so as to treat my people as well as impart knowledge to my colleagues. Thus I would like to fine tune my skills in retinal and macular surgeries, scleral bucking, and management of all medical retinal diseases and be abreast with the latest technologies and advances in retina. I am interested in doing a basic science research involving the chemical mediators of diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity.
Apart from being a retinal fanatic, I am also a devoted wife and mom who loves dancing and gardening.
