Eszter Szalai, MD, PhD completed her medical school and ophthalmology residency at the University of Debrecen (Debrecen, Hungary). Her PhD studies in anterior segment imaging were completed at the same institution. As a part of international collaboration, she examined the pathogenesis of human corneal stromal dystrophies at the University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio, Finland. Afterwards as a member of a cross-border and multidisciplinary research team she was involved in the investigation of proteolysis linked mechanism in corneal dystrophies. Dr. Szalai holds a position of attending sub-specialist at the University of Debrecen Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Szalai furthered her sub-specialty training in Ocular Oncology and Pathology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, USA. She has published over 40 scientific papers in major peer-reviewed journals and has attended many international meetings and conferences.

Field of interest: Pathophysiology and diagnosis of corneal and ocular surface disorders, especially the modern imaging techniques of the anterior segment. Diagnosis and treatment of intra- and extraocular malignancies with special interest of oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery.
