Nick Astbury trained in ophthalmology in Brighton and Moorfields (amongst other places!) and worked for 6 months in Botswana. In 1983 he was appointed as a consultant ophthalmic surgeon in Norwich, specialising in paediatric ophthalmology.

In 1993 Nick was elected as East Anglian Representative to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and became president 10 years later from 2003-6.

Nick also works at the International Centre for Eye Health in London and is particularly involved with the VISION 2020 Links programme and the Journal of Community Eye Health. He has started a VISION 2020 link between Sudan and Norwich.

He now chairs VISION 2020 UK and is Medical Advisor to the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital, Vice Chairman of the Impact Foundation and serves on the Royal College of Ophthalmologists' Council as chair of the International Committee.

Other current roles include Co-chair of IAPB Europe, Vice-chair of the Impact Foundation, Chair of the Duke-Elder Fund, Trustee of the Keeler Scholarship Trust and Consultant Advisor to the Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind
