I began my education in General Medicine directly after secondary school in Peru. I attended San Luis Gonzaga National University of Ica, Peru, from 1976 though graduation in 1987 to obtain my Professional Degree of Physician & Surgeon, Awarded July 1987. I then matriculated at Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Peru, where I earned a Physician Specialization Degree in Ophthalmology (Post-Graduate), Awarded 1995 and published "Effects of Hypocapnia on Intraocular Pressure", in the Colombian Review of Anesthesiology Volume 24: 81-83, 1996. Starting in 198, I worked as a staff physician at the Naval Medical Center General Medicine Department in Lima, Peru, where I successfully performed more than one thousand cataract, pterygium, chalazion, and eyelid surgeries, as well as more five-hundred lacrimal duct explorations.
From 1990 through 1992, I was Chairman of the Emergency Department at the same facility, and had the great opportunity to perform duties in the area of Internal Medicine for military members and their families, as well as serve on the Navy-sponsored ship "BAP Morona" that travelled up the Amazon River, allowing me to treat patients with a variety of ailments, including ophthalmic anomalies and illnesses, from many villages. From 1993 through 2005, I served as Chairman of the Ophthalmology Department at the same facility, where I supervised sixteen ophthalmology professionals, including doctors, nurses, technology specialists, and administrative staff, and provided services to enlisted, officers, and their families.
In 1997, I took an Advanced Ophthalomology program through the Bascom Palmer Institute, and in 2000, earned a certification in Anterior Segment Specialty through the Latin America Scientific Visual Center in Medellin, Colombia. From 1995 through 2005 I also had a private practice in Ophthalmology located in Lima, Peru. In 2006, I moved to the United States, and have since obtained an R.N. degree from Sacred Heart University in Santurce, Puerto Rico. I am working now to re-enter the field of ophthalmology here in Miami.
