Dr. Satoshi Kashii is Professor of Visual Sciences and Ophthalmology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Aichi Shukutoku University, Aichi, Japan. Current research interests concern clinical research that addresses function, disease and response to therapy of neuro-ophthalmic disorders, with particular emphasis in visual fields and optic nerve disorders. Previous basic research concerned functional roles of the endogenous neurotransmitters in neuronal cell death and survival in the retina. Using cultured embryonic rat retinal neurons, he had demonstrated that neurotransmitters including modulators deliver not only neuronal signals but signals concerning cell survival or death. He is the Co-chair of the Ophthalmology Topic Advisory Group (TAG) for the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) at the World Health Organization and the Chair of the International Council of Ophthalmology Taskforce for ICD-11. As for social activities, Dr. Kashii is the Secretary General of the Asian Neuro-Ophthalmology Society. He is the Co-editor-in-chief of the Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology, and an editorial board member of the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology, and the Neuro-Ophthalmology Japan.
