Doctor Batlle is founder of the Residency Training Program in Santo Domingo known as Elias Santana . This program iwas created in 1985 and accepts eight residents per year in general ophthalmology. Fellowship training is also availsble in Retina-vitreous, Cornea, Refractive Surgery, Glaucoma, Oculoplastics, Neurophthalmology, and Pediatric Ophthalmology. The residency training emphasizes the use of appropriate technology and Research in Prevention of Blindness. Outreach projects better known as "Jornadas" take place every month and is a required activity for residents. The performance at this site depends heavily on the ICO examination which is now a requirement for entry (basic) and also for Graduation (Optics and Refraction) . It is also a requirement of the Dominican Society of Ophthalmology as of 2014. The residents get exposed to a clinic with nearly 400 outpatient visits per day and they receive a very generous hands-on experience in surgery (Phaco,MSICS, Trabeculectomy, Pterygium, Femto, Excimers, and exposure to Retina Vitreous and Oculoplastics). Dr. Batlle has led two surveys of bindness in the D.E., deveveloped the technique for Amniotic Membrane transplants, pioneered the use of the Femtosecond in cataract surgery, pioneered the use of the ICL and is known as a great coach and teacher of surgery.
