Bertil Eric Damato, MD, PhD

Dr Damato was born in Malta. He received his undergraduate medical training at the University of Malta (1970-1977) and his post-graduate training at the Glasgow NHS Teaching Hospitals and Glasgow University 1978-1987. His qualifications include: LRCP, MRCS(Eng)(1977); FRCS(Ed)(1982); PhD(Glasgow)(1987); FRCOphth(UK)(1989); MD(Malta)(1989); FRCS(Glas)(1990).

Dr Damato was Senior Lecturer (1987-1991) then Reader (1991-1992) at Glasgow University; Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Glasgow Western Infirmary (1987-1993); Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital (1993-2013); and Honorary Clinical Tutor (1993-2000) at Liverpool University. He is currently Professor of Ophthalmology and Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco (2013-); Honorary Professor of Ophthalmology at Liverpool University (2000-); and Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology (2006-) and Royal Liverpool University Hospital (2013-). Dr Damato's research interests include: treatment of ocular tumors; molecular biology of ocular melanomas; estimating survival probability in patients with ocular melanoma; and oculo-kinetic perimetry. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, 60 reviews, 50 book chapters and 6 books, one as single author.

Dr Damato's honors include the Begley Prize, Royal College of Surgeons of England (1977); Bjerrum Medal, Danish Ophthalmological Society (2006); Cohen Gold Medal, South Africa (2008); National Health Service Platinum Award, UK (2009); Ashton Medal, Royal College of Ophthalmologists, UK (2012); Watson Medal, Cambridge Ophthalmological Symposium (2012); Jerry Shields Award, Asia-Pacific Society of Ocular Oncology and Pathology, Hong Kong (2012); and Paul Harris Fellowship, Rotary Club of Mid-Wirral (2013). He has served as Founding Secretary (1992-1996) then President of the European Ophthalmic Oncology Group (1997-1999); President of the European Vision and Eye Research Association (2000-2001); Vice-President (2007-2011) then President of the International Society of Ocular Oncology; and Chairman of the Program Committee of the American Association of Ophthalmic Oncologists and Pathologists (2012-).

Dr Damato is married to Frankanne and has two children: Erika (Attending Medical Ophthalmologist at Birmingham Eye Infirmary, UK) and Stephen (Attending Pathologist at Oxford University Hospitals, UK). Interests include sailing, cycling and traveling.
