ICO Task Force on Uncorrected Refractive Error

There are an estimated 153 million persons worldwide with visual loss from uncorrected refractive error, according to the World Health Organization.

The ICO Task Force on Uncorrected Refractive Error (URE) was formed in 2007 to strengthen the involvement of the ophthalmic profession, in cooperation with others, to meet this challenge.

Task Force Objectives:

  • Identify the magnitude of URE and the unmet need for refractive services by geographic region
  • Provide guidelines to implement the Durban Declaration on Refractive Error and Service Development
  • Access different existing models for meeting the public needs in terms of human resources (Optometrists, Refractionists, Orthoptists), infrastructure, technology and management
  • Promote successful models for adoption and implementation in different countries
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders to define and promote guidelines for refraction training curriculum development
