To facilitate the implementation of Vision 2020 in sub-Saharan Africa, the University of Cape Town will be conducting an approximately one-year long course on developing and implementing community eye health programs.

Vision 2020 is a partnership initiative between the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) for the elimination of avoidable blindness.

The course earns a post-graduate diploma from the University of Cape Town. Students develop strategies for human resource development, infrastructure development, and disease control. They then implement, administer, manage and monitor a Vision 2020 program.

The course will be held at the University of Cape Town Community Eye Health Institute at Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town, South Africa. Participants come to Cape Town for 10 weeks at the beginning of the course in January 2012 and again for 2 weeks at the end of the course in November 2012.
