Council approves increased funding
Meeting in New Delhi in January 2003, the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) approved increased funding for the IFOS/ICO International Fellowships for 2003 and 2004.
(The ICO is the executive body and operational arm of the International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies (IFOS).)
Advisory Committee supports Assessments and Fellowships
Meeting the day before the Council, the newly reorganized Advisory Committee to the ICO expressed strong support for both the IFOS/ICO International Fellowships and the International Basic and Clinical Assessments.
Chaired by H. Dunbar Hoskins, Jr., MD, the Advisory Committee recommended, and the Council agreed, that individuals who have passed the Basic and Clinical Science Assessments should be given preference in consideration for IFOS/ICO International Fellowships.
Fellowships added in New York, Regensburg, Singapore, Essen, Jeddah and Westmead, Australia
Additional fellowships are now being offered at the:
- New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in New York, New York, USA
- Klinikum der Universität Regensburg in Regensburg, Germany
- Singapore National Eye Centre in Singapore
- University Eye Hospital in Essen, Germany
- Magrabi Eye & Ear Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and the
- Children's Hospital at Westmead, Australia.
Also added since the establishment of the fellowships in July 2002, were:
- Prof. Dr. Raymond P. Le Blanc in Halifax, Canada
- Charing Cross Hospital in London
- Hôpital Jules Gonin in Lausanne, Switzerland, and
- University of Arizona Department of Ophthalmology in Tucson, Arizona, USA.

Donations to IFOS/ICO International Fellowship
Novartis Ophthalmic has donated CHF 29,000 and the Bruppacher Foundation in Zurich has donated CHF 50,000 to help make IFOS/ICO Fellowships available to ophthalmologists from developing countries.
An additional CHF 70,000 has been contributed to the Fellowships from private individuals.
