Recipients of the ICO Fellowship 2001 – 2002 (alphabetically)
Mr. Solomon Abate, MD, from Ethiopia, then trained in Nairobi, started his three months ICO Fellowship in September 2002 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Host was Prof. A. Deutman. He will return to St. Nazareth Hospital, Nairobi, Kenia
Dr. Hitesh Mulchand Chheda from Sion, Mumbai, India, Chief resident at the Department of Ophthalmology under Dr. S.A. Motwane, Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College, received a three months ICO Fellowship to be trained in medical retina by Prof. J.-J. DeLaey, Ghent, Belgium from March 3rd - June 1st 2002. He retuned to his home Institution.
Mr. Tarun Choudhary, MD, Surg. Lt.CDR., from Eye Department INHS Nivarini, Khurda Orissa, India will start a three months fellowship in medical retina under the supervision of Prof. J.-J. Delay, University Eye Hospital, Ghent, Belgium, in April 2003 and then return to India.
Dr. Sanjoy Chowdhury, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Bokaro General Hospital, Bihar, India, had a three-month ICO Fellowship to obtain subspeciality training in glaucoma under Prof. N. Pfeiffer, University Eye Hospital, Mainz, Germany from 29th April - 31 July 2002. He returned to his former working place.
Mrs. Toyin Folasade Fasina, MD, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria had an ICO Fellowship for a training course in cataract surgery for two months from January 26th - March 31st 2002. The host was Dr. C.A. Nelson Jesudasan, St. Joseph Eye Hospital, Malidupur, Tiruchy, Tanula Nada, India. Dr. Fasina returned to her home institution.
Mr. José Figuera, MD, consultant ophthalmologist at the Hospital Vargas, Caracas, Venezuela, had a three-month ICO Fellowship as a contribution to a longer training period in oculoplastic surgery under the the supervision of Prof. J. P.Adénis at the Dpt. d'ophtalmologie, Hôpital Universitaire Dupuytren, Limoges, France. He will return to Caracas after about one year of subspeciality training.
Mr. Marcel Alexandru Ionita, MD, from Eye Department, Central Military Hospital, Bucharest, Romania, had a three-month fellowship to be trained by Prof. J.-J. DeLaey, Ghent, Belgium in vitreoretinal diseases from September - December 2002. He will return to his home institution.
Mrs. Rim Kamoun, MD, Service d'Ophthalmologie, Hospital Charles Nicolle de Tunis in Tunisia had a three months fellowship for training in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus from December 1st 2001 - February 28 2002 under the supervision of Professor Dr. Dr.h.c. G. Naumann, Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Erlangen, Germany. She returned to her home institution.
Mr. Zaza Khostenshvili, MD, from the Georgian National Eye Center, Tbilisi, Georgia had a three-months ICO Fellowship for training in Paediatric Ophthalmolgy at the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Freiburg i. Brsg, Germany under Prof. H. Witschel from March to May 2002. He returned to his home institution.
Mrs. Na Li, MD from Tong Ren Hospital, Bejing, P.R. China, had a three-month ICO Fellowship for subspeciality training in Erlangen from September to December 2001, sponsored by the "Foerderverein of the University of Erlangen" and some special funds of the department of Ophthalmology. Hosts were Prof. G.O.H. Naumann, Erlangen, Germany and his staff. Dr. Liu went back to her home instituition.
Mr. Wu Liu, MD, from Tong Ren Hospital, Beijing, P.R. China, had a three-month fellowship for subspeciality training in Erlangen from September to December 2001, sponsored by the "Foerderverein of the University of Erlangen" and some special funds of the department of Ophthalmology. Hosts were Prof. G.O.H. Naumann, Erlangen, Germany and his staff. He went back to his home instituition.
Mr. Ajay Sureshchandra Lohiya, from the Dpt. Of Ophthalmology, Lokmania Tilak Municipal Hospital, Sion, Mumbai, India had a three-month ICO Fellowship, to be trained in eye banking and corneal transplantation under the supervision of Prof. J.-J. Delay, University Eye Hospital, Ghent, Belgium from January - April 2003. He will return to his home institution.
Mrs. Rossitzka Lolova, MD, senior assistant professor, University Eye Clinic, Mladost, Bulgaria, had a three-month IFOS/ICOfellowship for training in paediatric ophthalmology under the supervision of Prof. A. Kampik and Prof. K. Boergen, University Eye Hospital, Munich, Germany from September - December 2002 and will return to her home institution.
Mrs. Lilit Mkrtchyan, MD, consultant at Yerevan Eye Clinic, Armenia, had a three-month ICO Fellowship for training in paediatric ophthalmology under the supervision of Prof. Emilio Campos, University Eye Hospital, Bologna, Italy, from October to December 2002. She will return to the Yerevan Eye Clinic, Armenia.
Mr. Dimitar Petrov, MD, senior assistant professor at the University Eye Clinic in Sofia, Bulgaria had a three-month ICO Fellowship for training in vitreoretinal surgery under Prof. A. Kampik, Dpt. of Ophthalmology, University of Munich, Germany, from December 2002 - February 2003 and will return into his home University.
Mrs. Manjoo S. Reddy, MD, from Bangalore, India, associate professor at the St. John's Medical College Hospital in Bangalore, India, had a three-month fellowship to be trained by : Dr. Stivan Archer and Dr. Del Monte, Kellogg Eye Centre, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus from October 1st 2001 - December 31st 2001. After her return she became head of the Department of Ophthalmology at her home institution, the St. John's Medical College Hospital in Bangalore, India.
Mr. Firas Rida, MD, from Syria, is working with Prof. J.-P. Adénis, Limoges, France. He received speciality training in oculoplastic surgery. The ICO Fellowship is a contribution to a longer period of training from 2000 to 2002. Dr. Rida will return to Syria in January 2003.
Mrs. Sadia Sethi, senior registrar of Ophthalmic Medical Sciences, Peshawar, Pakistan had a six-month ICO Fellowship for training in general and in paediatric ophthalmology and plastic surgery under the supervision of Prof. A. Kampik, Prof. K. Boergen and Prof. V. Klauss, Dpt. of Ophthalmology, University of Munich, Germany. She will return to the Khyber Institute in Peshawar, Pakistan.
Mrs. Brinda Shah, MD, from Sunshine Eye Care Unit in Ashutosh, India, had a 3/4 ICO Fellowship for a three-month period to be trained in glaucoma from August to October 2002 . Host was Prof. N. Pfeiffer, Mainz, Germany. Dr. Brinda Shah returned in November 2002 to her home institution.
Mr. Paritosh Shah, MD, from Sunshine Eye Care Unit in Ashutosh, India, had a 3/4 ICO Fellowship for a three-month period to be trained in vitreoretinal surgery. Host was Prof. N. Pfeiffer and his staff, Mainz, Germany. Dr. Paritosh Shah returned in November to his home institution.
Mr. Yana Shenk, MD, Academy of Medical Sciences, Kiev, Ukraine, received a three-month ICO Fellowship as part of a longer fellowship period for training in Neuro-Ophthalmology and Electrophysiology under the the supervision of Prof. E. Zrenner, University Eye Department, Tübingen, Germany from July to October 2002. Dr. Shenk is still in Tubingen.
Mrs. Xin Tang, MD, from Tong Ren Hospital, Bejing, P.R. China, had a three-month fellowship for subspeciality training following IFOS/ICO-Policies in Erlangen from September to December 2001, sponsored by the "Foerderverein of the University of Erlangen" and some special funds of the department of Ophthalmology. Hosts were Prof. G.O.H. Naumann, Erlangen, Germany and his staff. He returned to his home institution.
Ms. Neepa Thacker, MD, from Mumbai, India, junior Ophthalmic Consultant, Paediatric Ophthalmologist at K.B.H. Bachooali Charitable Eye and ENT-Hospital, had a three-month ICO Fellowship to support part of her two year stage in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus studying under Arthur L. Rosenbaum, MD, Professor of Ophthalmology at the Division of Paediatric Ophthalmology, Joseph l. Demer and Sherwin J. Isenberg at the Jules Stein Institute in the Department of Ophthalmology at UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles, California, USA from July 1st 2001 to June 30, 2002. Dr. Thacker will return to India.
Gholam Hossin Yacoubi from Iran spent a three month ICO Fellowship for training in Medical Retina under the supervision of Prof. Gisèle Soubrane, at the Dpt. of Ophthalmology, University of Paris, Paris XII, Créteil, France.
Mr. Liu Yi, MD, associate professor at Tianjin Eye Hospital, Tianjin, P.R. China, received a three-month ICO Fellowship for training in corneal transplantation and eye banking under the supervision of Prof. Z. Zagorski, University Eye Hospital, Lublin, Poland from November 2002 to Januar 2003. He will return to his home institution.
Mrs. Fornica Zlatarova, MD, chief, outpatient department, Eye Hospital, Varna, Bulgaria, received a three-month ICO Fellowship for training in medical retina under the supervision of Prof. A. Kampik, University of Munich, Germany, from September - November 2002. She will return to her home institution.

Dr. Shadi Qassim Al-Khatib from Jordan had a three month ICO Fellowship under the supervision of Prof. Bornfeld and Prof. Steuhl, University of Essen / Germany. He will return to his home insitution.
Dr. Raj Anand from India received a three month ICO Fellowship for training in oculoplastic surgery and oncology under the supervision of Prof. J.F. Nerad, Oculoplastic, Orbital and Oncology Service in Iowa City, Iowa, USA. He will return to her home insitution.
Dr. Patricia Brito from Brasil received a three months ICO Fellowship for training in medical retina under the supervision of Prof. J. Cunha-Vaz, University of Coimbra/Portugal. She will return to her home institution.
Dr. Sandra Bursac from Novi Sad, Yugoslavia received a three months ICO Fellowship for training in vitreoretinal diseases under the supervision of Prof. J. J. DeLaey, University of Ghent/Belgium. She will return to her home institution.
Dr. Sujata Das from India received a three months ICO Fellowship for training in paediatric ophthalmology and cornea and anterior segment diseases under the supervision of Prof. G.O.H. Naumann, University of Erlangen/Germany. She will return to her home institution.
Dr. Minal Dhamankar from India received a three months ICO Fellowship for training in cornea diseases and cataract surgery under the supervision of Prof. G.O.H. Naumann, University of Erlangen/Germany. She will return to her home institution.
Dr. Katayoon Baradara Ebrahimi from Iran received a three month ICO Fellowship under the supervision of Prof. A. Deutman, University Nymegen / Netherlands. He will return to his home institution.
Dr. Oluyemi Fasina from Nigeria received a three month ICO Fellowship at the Institute of Ophthalmology, Joseph Eye Hospital, Tiruchy / India under the supervision of Prof. N. Jesudasan. She will return to her home institution.
Fawzi Abu Jalhum, from Gaza, Palestine, received a special award from private sponsors for residency training at the Dpt. of Ophthalmology of the Jordanian University to be trained under the supervision of Dr. Maha Alttal, Head of the department.
Dr. Ibrar Hussain from Pakistan received a three month ICO Fellowship for training in comprehensive Ophthalmology, under the supervision of Dr. R. Sampath, University of Leicester/ UK. He will return to his home institution.
Dr. Jai Adithy Kelkar from India received a three month ICO Fellowship under the supervision of Prof. DeLaey at Ophthalmological Department , University of Ghent / Belgium. He will return to his home institution.
Dr. Rekha R. Khandelwal from India received a three month ICO Fellowship for training on glaucoma under the supervision of Prof. G. Spaeth, Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia / Pennsylvania / USA. He will return to his home institution.
Dr. Bipasha Mukherjee form India received a three month ICO Fellowship for training in oculoplastic surgery under the supervision of Prof. J.P. Adénis, Hôpital Dupuytren, Limoges / France. He will return to his home institution.
Dr. Ahmed Nasima from Bangladesh received a three months ICO Fellowship under the supervision of Dr. Ang Chong Lye at National Eye Centre in Singapore. He will return to his home institution. Dr. Ang Chong Lye, Feb-July 03
Dr. Kilangalanga Ngoy from Republic of Congo received a three month ICO Fellowship for training on paediatric ophthalmology under the supervision of Prof. R. Guhoff, Eye Clinic in Rostock/Germany. He will return to his home institution.
Dr. Mukesh Chandar Porwal from India received a three month ICO Fellowship focusing on vitreo-retinal diseases under the supervision of Prof. DeLaey at Ophthalmological Department , University of Ghent / Belgium.
Dr. Narender Seshadri from India received a three month ICO Fellowship for training on retinal diseases under the supervision of Prof. Gisèle Soubrane, Eye Clinic in Créteil / France. He will return to his home institution.
Dr. Kalpit Shah from India received a three month ICO Fellowship under the supervision of Prof. R. Guhoff, Eye Clinic in Rostock/Germany. He will return to his home institution.
Dr. Hrishikesh Tadwalkar from India received a three month ICO Fellowship for training on orbital diseases, ocular oncology and surgery of the orbit unter supervision of Dr. J. Rootman at University of British Columbia, Vancouver / Canada. He will return to his home institution.
Dr. Abukakar Tafida from Nigeria received a three month ICO Fellowship for training on paediatric ophthalmology under the supervision of Prof. R. Guhoff, Eye Clinic in Rostock/Germany. He will return to his home institution.
Dr. Teshome Tiliksew from Ethiopia received a three month ICO Fellowship for training on medical and surgical vitreoretinal diseases under supervision of Dr. John D. Dickinson, Dalhousi University, Halifax / Canada. He will return to his home institution.
Fellowship recipients "Application March 31st 2003" (awarded through July 2003)
33 applications came in for the March 31st term. 19 could be awarded, two had to be postponed and 13 had to be declined.
The 19 ophthalmologists who received an award will be listed later.
