WHO urged to accept ICO Clinical Guidelines and Research Agenda
Participants in a World Health Organization (WHO) Advisory Meeting on Research Priorities in Geneva, September 8 to 10, 2003 recommended formal acceptance by WHO of the ICO's International Clinical Guidelines and its Research Agenda for Global Blindness Prevention.
Guidelines can contribute to global eye care
The ICO's development of International Clinical Guidelines "would be a major contribution to global eye care," according to Gullapalli Rao, MD.
Dr. Rao, Secretary-General of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), spoke at a symposium on the guidelines at the XXIX International Congress of Ophthalmology in April 2002 in Sydney, Australia.
International Clinical Guidelines updated
Three of the ICO's International Clinical Guidelines have been updated since they were originally published:
- Cataract (Initial evaluation)
- Age-related Macular Degeneration (Initial and follow-up evaluation)
- Age-related Macular Degeneration (Management recommendations)
The guidelines were defined as part of implementation of the Vision for the Future, partly in response to comments from leaders of the IAPB that such guidelines would be extremely useful in implementation of the VISION 2020: The Right to Sight initiative.
