ICO Task Force revises Curriculum Guidelines for resident and subspecialist training
An international Task Force formed by the ICO has developed "Guidelines and Standards for Education of an Ophthalmologist: A Curricular Outline."
Drafted by Morton F. Goldberg, MD, and Andrew G. Lee, MD, for the ICO's International Task Force on Ophthalmology for Resident and Specialist Training, the Curriculum Guidelines cover basic, standard and advanced levels of ophthalmic training.
For each level, the Curriculum Guidelines define cognitive skills and technical skills for each of 14 ophthalmic conditions and for ophthalmic practice in general.
An extensive appendix suggests general references (books) and journal articles on key studies in each clinical area for recommended and additional reading.
Comments requested on draft Curriculum Guidelines for medical student education
Comments are requested on draft "International Curriculum Guidelines in Ophthalmology for Medical Students" developed by the ICO International Task Force on Ophthalmic Curriculum on Medical Student Education, which is chaired by Richard K. Parrish, MD.
The draft Curriculum Guidelines propose a range of standards for medical student education, including ophthalmic cognitive and clinical skills for medical students and the time allotment for ophthalmic education in medical schools.
ICO committee proposes agenda for research to prevent blindness
The Research Committee of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) has defined a Research Agenda for Global Blindness Prevention.
The report "creates an unprecedented opportunity for the entire ophthalmic community to advance the research agenda to preserve and restore vision," said ICO Secretary General, Bruce E. Spivey, MD.
Chaired by ICO Research Director Alfred Sommer, MD, the Committee met in October, 2002, and outlined opportunities for research in seven clinical areas (see the Research Agenda Contents).
Fellowship Director reports to ICO
Balder Gloor, MD, ICO Treasurer and Fellowship Director, has revised his 2003 report on the IFOS/ICO International Fellowship program to include Fellowships awarded in March.
A total of 66 fellowships have been awarded since the program was approved in July of 2000.
