IFOS meets every two years
The International Federation of Ophthalmologic Societies (IFOS) represents and serves societies of ophthalmologists around the world.
Representatives from IFOS member societies meet once every two years to set policy and direction for the organization. (See the Statutes for more details.)
Council is the Executive of IFOS
As the executive and operational arm of IFOS, the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) meets once a year, often in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis.
See the Regulations of the ICO for more details.
Composition of the Council
The Council is composed of:
- Officers = Executive Committee (4 members)
- Ex Officio members:
- Presidents of supranational societies (5)
- Presidents of other ophthalmologic and vision organizations (maximum of 10)
- Ordinary members: (maximum of 20)
- ICO Program Directors (currently 6)
- Ophthalmologists selected based on geography and contributions to ophthalmology
See the Council Members.
Advisory Committee to the Council
The Advisory Committee to the ICO meets just before each Council meeting to evaluate issues relevant to international ophthalmology and vision and make recommendations to the Council.
The Advisory Committee was reorganized in 2003 to include representatives of international subspecialty organizations in ophthalmology.
See the Members of the Advisory Committee.
Operating responsibility
The operation of the ICO is overseen by the Executive Committee, which acts on behalf of the Council between Council meetings, and directed by the Secretary General.
Major programs of the ICO are led and managed by Program Directors, who are members of the Council.
The Directors chair Committees and Task Forces, which report through them to the Council.
