ICO Web Site and Internet Plan, May 2000

Attachment A: Results, Other Strategies and Ideas

This attachment lists the broad continuing results to be achieved by the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) Web site and use of the Internet and other specific strategies and ideas suggested in addition to those listed in the main Plan.

Results

Critical Results To Be Obtained:

- The ICO is established as the clear international leader in ophthalmology and as a primary advocate for ophthalmology and for the blind
- Good communications between the Council (the Executive) and International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies (IFOS) organizations (the members), so that the ICO knows the needs of leaders and meets those needs
- Ophthalmologists are aware of educational meetings, materials and fellowships available to help them become better educated and provide better care for patients
- The ICO facilitates communication within ophthalmology around the world
- The ICO Web site is recognized as the best and easiest source for ophthalmologists to obtain information on what's happening in ophthalmology internationally
- By the year 2002, at least 50 percent of ophthalmologists are aware of the inequities and inequalities in the availability of eye care internationally and of the efforts of the World Health Organization (WHO), International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), Vision 2020 and others to address those problems

Other Results:

- IFOS societies feel they are communicated with and supported by the ICO; they recognize and appreciate what they get out of their participation in IFOS and pay their dues
- Strong and effective national and supranational ophthalmologic societies
- WHO, IAPB and other NGOs recognize ICO as the main voice for ophthalmology internationally: they value ICO, involve it in their thinking and planning and communicate with ophthalmologists through it
- The public can obtain accurate information about eye care
- The ICO facilitates training of ophthalmologists, other ophthalmic professionals and medical students in developing countries
- Ophthalmologists are involved in prevention of blindness initiatives
- Ophthalmologists are proud of their profession
- Improved image of ophthalmology within medicine and ophthalmology remains within the spectrum of medicine
- The ICO is represented and presents information on its activities at the business meetings of each IFOS society

Other Possible Strategies and Ideas

About the ICO and IFOS:

- Provide information on the standing committees of the ICO and what they're doing
- Publish ICO policy statements, such as recommending that training institutions include five percent of foreign nationals
- Publish relevant documents on the Web site, such as the Statutes and Regulations, minutes of meetings, letters from the President to IFOS members, societies that have not paid their dues, financial reports and audits, etc.
- Add the history of the ICO
- Emphasize ICO as the primary voice for ophthalmology and reduce the use acronyms and confusion about the various organizations involved in ophthalmology
- Give individuals credit for work they've done, rather than attribute it to Committees
- Explain why the ICO has a Web site and include a summary of this Web Site and Internet Plan

Ophthalmologists / Education:

- Publish practice guidelines being developed by the Guidelines Committee
- List fellowship programs that are available
- Provide information on residency programs in ophthalmology, as well as training programs for ophthalmic professionals
- Include statistics on the basic and clinical Examinations and name the recipients of medals, if they allow it
- Make educational materials available for download at no cost when possible
- Inform ophthalmologists about problems facing ophthalmology, including political and socioeconomic issues

Preservation of Vision:

- Publish the International Ophthalmology Strategic Plan and the assignments that have evolved from it, giving the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis appropriate credit
- Publish epidemiologic information on blindness
- Publish data on the economic benefit of eye care
- Provide links to the Web sites for the WHO, IAPB, Vision 2020, NGOs, etc.

IFOS Societies:

- Demonstrate to IFOS Representatives and other Society leaders (including treasurers) what the ICO does for them, so that they are inclined to pay their dues
- Ask them what else they would like to have the ICO do for them and encourage their comments and feedback
- Report on their meeting dates, election results, etc.
- Consider offering to create a single Web page for each society at no cost and providing additional help with developing a Web site on a fee-for-service basis
- Provide information and resources to help them manage their societies effectively

Site Design and Style:

- Speed up the animation on the home page so that it loads more quickly
- Add pictures of ICO leaders responsible for different programs in order to recognize their contributions and personalize the site
