Web-Based Teaching: An Online Course for Medical Educators, Organized by the International Council of Ophthalmology

March 2012

Date: May 30-July 18, 2012

Format: Online Course

Goal of the Course: To help medical teachers enter into the web-based teaching setting to enhance their teaching possibilities.

Rationale: Being an expert on a clinical or surgical topic does not translate into being a good teacher. To become a good teacher both, a theoretical framework supporting the use of teaching strategies as well as practical advice on how to implement these strategies are needed.

In addition to the above skills, entering the web-based teaching arena requires a theoretical background, practical advice, and software tools for development of the specific multimedia interventions and communication processes characterizing e-learning.

Target audience: Medical and non-medical members of teaching hospitals who are developing, or intend to develop, e-learning teaching activities.

Independent medical doctors and other health care providers interested in developing e-learning, teaching skills.

Course coordination:

Dr. Eduardo Mayorga, Director of E-learning, International Council of Ophthalmology
Dr. Karl Golnik, Director for Education, International Council of Ophthalmology
Dr. Gabriela Palis, Editor in Chief, Center for Ophthalmic Educators, International Council of Ophthalmology

Course structure:  The course content is structured into 7 Modules:  5 Content Modules + Module 0 to present the course + Module 6 to summarize the content learned and share productions. Each Module is sequenced into 1 or more lessons. Each lesson will be composed of:

  • An audiovisual presentation to teach a specific chunk of content, created under instructional design principles. This material will contain presentations and quizzes to verify understanding.
  • Reading resources for more information (mandatory and optional)
  • Learning activities to practice concepts and apply knowledge, such as personal productions, case studies, problems solving, among others.  Activities will be submitted through the Virtual Learning Environment to the tutor or uploaded to a public space in the platform to be shared with others.
  • Forums, to discuss, build and share experience on any matter related to the lessons.

Participants time requirements: Each participant will have individualized timing, according to previous knowledge and experience.

As a general rule, weekly dedication is estimated as 2 to 4 hours to access the audiovisual presentation, solve quizzes within it, develop activities and participate in forums discussions. Optional readings may consume additional time
