Supporting Recovery Efforts in Nepal

Hugh Taylor, MD, AC <br>ICO President Hugh Taylor, MD, AC
ICO President

I want to keep you apprised of our on-going communication with the Nepal Ophthalmic Society (NOS) following the devastating earthquake in that region on April 25.
NOS President Sanjay Kumar Singh, MD, reports severe damage to eye equipment and eye care facilities in Kathmandu and in the midwestern and eastern sections of Nepal. The earthquake also affected many ophthalmologists and ophthalmic paramedics who lost homes and loved ones. The NOS has been in contact with Namrata Gupta, MD, a young ophthalmologist who tragically lost her parents, younger brother, and house.

The NOS has established a monetary fund for rebuilding eye hospitals and eye care centers, supplying shelter for victims of the earthquake, and for providing Dr. Gupta with the financial means to complete her residency.

The ICOFoundation is contributing $5,000 towards these efforts, and we invite our friends and colleges to join us by sending assistance to:

Ophthalmological Society of South Africa Selected to Host WOC2020

The ICO Board of Trustees voted to accept the proposal of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (OSSA) to host the 2020 World Ophthalmology Congress® (WOC) in Cape Town, South Africa. The selection of the host is provisional, pending definition and approval by ICO and OSSA of an Agreement on Expectations for WOC2020, which is anticipated later this year.

In October 2014, ICO Member societies in the Middle East/Africa region were invited to submit proposals to host WOC2020. The ICO reviewed materials received based on predetermined critical considerations and sent the leading proposals to the Board of Trustees for review at the May 14, 2015, Board meeting in Milan, Italy.

At the Milan Board meeting, there were presentations from each of the three finalist ICO Member societies bidding: the Emirates Ophthalmic Society, the Oman Ophthalmic Society, and OSSA, followed by a Board vote on provisional selection of the host and venue. The ICO looks forward to working with OSSA to organize the first WOC in Africa in 2020.

The WOC is held in a different region every two years. WOC2016, hosted by the Mexican Society of Ophthalmology and co-hosted by the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, will be February 5–9, 2016, in Guadalajara, Mexico. The 2018 WOC will be hosted by the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology (Sociedad Española de Oftalmología–SEO) June 16–19, 2018, in Barcelona, Spain.

ICO Summit on Residency Training

The ICO and the Italian Ophthalmology Society (SOI) presented an interactive summit on ophthalmology residency training at the May SOI Congress in Milan.

Focusing on ophthalmology training in Italy and Europe, part one of the summit centered on teaching principles and realities. Topics included expectations of residents in the region and how utilizing adult learning approaches could strengthen residency training. Part two of the summit concentrated on applying technology to learning, evaluation of residents, and accreditation of educational programs.

The educational summit, organized by Emilio Campos, MD, Karl Golnik, MD, MEd, and Leonardo Mastropasqua, MD, offered insight for ophthalmic educators who share a common vision of continually improving teaching effectiveness and residency learning.
