ICO Notes
Please Let Us Know What You Need

September 2009

ICO President Bruce Spivey, MD, MS, MEd

Dear ICO Members and Friends,

A few reports:

How Can the ICO Serve You Better?

The ICO is working on a plan for the future use of information technology, including a new Web site, to help us better serve our members and raise the level of eye care around the world. As a critical part of that process, we are reconsidering the "identity" of our organization and how we can best present the ICO.

You should have received a request from me to fill out a short online survey last week. It is critical that we hear from ICO members and others who work closely with us. If you have not yet had the chance to complete it, please take 10 minutes today:

www.surveymonkey.com/ico

We are also interested in hearing feedback from your members. Would you please ask them to complete the survey as well? We greatly appreciate your help and participation.

Please Adapt and Share ICO Resources

When you receive email newsletters from the ICO, I hope you will consider how you can use the various ICO resources mentioned within your society and what you might want to include on your own Web site. For example, we offer:

  • ICO newsletters: archive.icoph.org/news/letters.html
  • Clinical Guidelines: archive.icoph.org/guide/index.html
  • Curricula: archive.icoph.org/ed/index.html#curric
  • Medical Student Handbooks: archive.icoph.org/ed/icomed.html#handbook,

(and much more) for you to translate, adapt to your needs and post on your Web site.

One ICO Member, Assistance for Development of Modern Ophthalmology Union (ADMO) of Azerbaijan, has done an outstanding job of using ICO resources. They have posted the last few ICO Leader Letters, translated the ICO Medical Student Handbook into Azerbaijani, posted a link to WOC 2010, and more on their Web site: www.admo.org.az (Azerbaijani) or www.admo.org.az/site/?lang=2 (English).

Please let us know how you have used ICO resources and what else we could offer that would be helpful to you.

WOC Registration Now Open

Registration for the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC®) 2010 is now open at www.woc2010.org/latest-news/online-registration.html.

Cultures, practice patterns, and breakthroughs will intermingle next June 5 to 9 in Berlin. The social and scientific are combined in this cosmopolitan city, which has been receiving rave reviews as a congress site. I encourage you and your members to register soon to secure your registration and preferred hotel.

As a reminder, ICO Members' Official Representatives to the ICO receive free WOC registration. To notify us of your Official Representative, please send the name, e-mail address, country and society name to info@icoph.org.

New ICO Board Members

ICO Secretary General, Jean-Jacques DeLaey, MD announced new Board of Trustees Members in the August ICO Leader Letter. In case you missed it, here's a recap:

Serge Resnikoff, MD, PhD, of France, was elected to fill the role of Director for Advocacy, replacing recently elected ICO Treasurer Hugh Taylor, AC, MD. Rubens Belfort, MD, of Brazil, was elected as Director for Communications. Robert Ritch, MD, of the United States, was elected as the new Advisory Committee Chair to replace Dunbar Hoskins, who resigned as Chair on March 31. And Suzanne Binder, MD, of Austria, and David Parke, MD, of the United States, were elected as two new "ordinary members."

Please join me in congratulating and welcoming these new ICO Board Members.

With warm regards,
Bruce
