ICO Notes
The Starfish, the Spider and International Ophthalmology

August 2009

ICO President Bruce Spivey, MD, MS, MEd

Dear ICO Members and Friends,

An invitation and a few reports:

The Starfish, the Spider and International Ophthalmology - October 24 in San Francisco

I invite you to learn the secrets behind some of today's most effective organizations and find out how you and your ophthalmological society can access this power at the next ICO World Ophthalmology Roundtable on Leadership Development (WORLD) meeting October 24 in San Francisco.

Ori Brafman, Co-Author of The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations, will speak on how starfish organizations take advantage of peer-to-peer relationships, leaving hierarchical "spider" organizations behind. I would highly recommend the book, and if you would like to read it before the meeting, you can locate a copy through the book's Web site: www.starfishandspider.com.

This dynamic meeting will also include discussion on Refocusing Ophthalmic Education, including adult learning and modern teaching methods, implications and options for ophthalmic education and a request for your ideas on how to enhance ophthalmic education.

Please come and join the discussion with us on Saturday, 24 October from 12:00-13:30 in Grand Ballroom C at the Intercontinental Hotel in San Francisco, California. The draft agenda is here: archive.icoph.org/pdf/ICOWORLDSanFrancisco.pdf.

I would like to thank the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology for co-sponsoring this Roundtable as part of the joint meeting with the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Refocusing Ophthalmic Education Insights Online

Did you know?

  • You can take a quick online test to assess your personal learning style
  • New insights into how adults learn can help us become better teachers
  • There are exciting examples of adult learning theories being applied to ophthalmic education, particularly through E-learning.

You can hear about these and other insights from the ICO's Refocusing Ophthalmic Education symposium, co-sponsored by the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) at their June '09 Congress, online in PowerPoint format with audio.

Click on the links below to take a self-paced tour through the presentations. You can control the slides to navigate to the various subjects that might interest you.
