ICO Notes
See You in Berlin - Plan for WOC 2010

July 2009

ICO President Bruce Spivey, MD, MS, MEd

Dear ICO Members and Friends,

A few short reports:

Free WOC Registration for ICO Representatives

I cordially invite all ICO Members to participate in the 32nd World Ophthalmology Congress® (WOC), June 5-9, 2010, in Berlin. In addition to an outstanding scientific program, a special social highlight will be a Bavarian-style Oktoberfest called "WOCtoberfest" with food and entertainment for WOC attendees and their families.

The Congress offers free registration for the official Representative to the ICO from each member society, so that every member can participate in the ICO General Assembly on June 5.

We ask that you select an official ICO Representative as soon as possible, ideally before December 1, 2009. To notify us of your Representative's details, please send their name, email address, country and society name to info@icoph.org. Member societies must also have paid their 2010 dues to receive free registration for their Representative. We will send membership dues notices in November.

WOC 2010 Registration opens July 31, 2009. For more information, visit the WOC 2010 Web site at www.woc2010.org/. You can sign up to receive email updates at www.woc2010.org/request-information.html, or contact the WOC 2010 at pco@woc2010.de.

We look forward to having you and your society join us for this important world meeting of ophthalmologists. See you in Berlin!

Please Help Publicize WOC 2010

We would appreciate whatever you can do to inform your members and others about the 2010 World Ophthalmology Congress® and encourage them to join us in Berlin.

Please add a link to the Congress, www.woc2010.org, to your Web site. You can also download the following promotional tools from www.woc2010.org/downloads.html:

ICO Medical Student Handbook Now in Four Languages

The ICO Medical Student Handbook contains tables of core knowledge and key ophthalmic disorders to assist medical students.

Now in Azerbaijani, Chinese, English, French and Spanish, the Handbook features descriptions and color pictures of the different causes of red eye and the common causes of acute loss of vision. This pocket-sized booklet summarizes the key points in ophthalmology and is designed for medical students to be portable and easy-to-use.

The Handbook is available for download from the ICO Web site:

archive.icoph.org/pdf/ICOMedicalStudentAzerbaijani.pdf (Azerbaijani - 1 MB) archive.icoph.org/pdf/ICOMedicalStudentChinese.pdf (Chinese - 812 KB) archive.icoph.org/pdf/ICOMedicalStudentEnglish.pdf (English - 830 KB) archive.icoph.org/pdf/ICOMedicalStudentFrench.pdf (French - 1 MB) archive.icoph.org/pdf/ICOMedicalStudentSpanish.pdf (Spanish - 812 KB)

The Handbook was created by professors Sue Lightman and Peter McCluskey for the ICO Task Force on Undergraduate Medical Education. Please share this valuable resource with your members and any educators or medical students who may find it useful.

ICO/Alcon Fellowship in Slovenia

Finally, I would like to remind you that applications are still being accepted for the new fellowship program at the ICO/Alcon Training Center at University Eye Hospital in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The program will offer training for two candidates at the post-residency level in cataract, oculoplastic or vitreoretinal surgery for one year, beginning September 2009.

For complete details and application information, see the February 2009 ICO Leader Letter article: archive.icoph.org/news/leader0902.html#a3. Interested candidates should apply as soon as possible, preferably before July 31, 2009. (Please note new deadline.)

Please share this information with your colleagues and anyone who may be interested.

With warm regards,
Bruce
