May 2009

ICO President Bruce Spivey, MD, MS, MEd

Dear ICO Members and Friends,

An invitation and a few reports:

WORLD Roundtable on Sunday, May 17 in Bali

For those of you attending the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress in Bali starting next week, please be sure to join us for the fourth World Ophthalmology Roundtable on Leadership Development (WORLD) meeting, where we will present and discuss the exciting new ICO initiative, "Refocusing Ophthalmic Education." It will be Sunday, May 17 from 07:00 to 09:00 in the Jakarta A room at the Bali International Convention Center. Breakfast will be available.

Topics will be:

  • Ophthalmic Education in the Asia Pacific: Current Status and New Initiatives
  • Adult Learning and Modern Teaching Methods
  • Implications and Options for Ophthalmic Education

You can download the full program for the Bali WORLD Roundtable meeting here: archive.icoph.org/pdf/ICOWORLDBali.pdf (PDF - 140 KB)

The ICO established the WORLD program in 2007 to bring leaders of ophthalmologic societies and educational institutions together to exchange information and ideas that will help develop effective programs to enhance ophthalmic education and access to eye care.

Modern Teaching Methods for Refocusing Ophthalmic Education

At the informal ICO meeting in March in Bahrain, we asked Drs. Andrew Lee and Karl Golnik to present their perspectives on modern teaching methods and their application to ophthalmic education.

You can watch the PowerPoint presentations and ensuing discussion online, complete with audio.

ICO Technology

For some time, we have been aware that we need to communicate faster and easier with ophthalmic leaders and individual ophthalmologists. I asked ICO Executive Director Bill Felch and Communications Manager Monica Slater to work on a process for the ICO to adopt new information technology. At the informal meeting in Bahrain, they presented their findings.

The proposed technology plan features online spaces to collaborate using new interactive tools and methods, in addition to a complete Web site overhaul. You can view the presentation with audio, at: campustercertermino.com/ttpresenter/ico/4felch_slater/player.html.

We will be asking for feedback from ICO society leaders and ophthalmologists.

In your opinion, what new technology does the ICO need to better serve our Members and ophthalmologists around the world? What do you think? Send your thoughts to Monica at mslater@icoph.org.

With warm regards,
Bruce
