ICO Notes
New ICO Identity

April 2010

ICO President Bruce Spivey, MD, MS, MEd

Dear ICO Members and Friends,

A few brief reports:

A New Look for the ICO

I am pleased to announce we have defined a new visual identity for the ICO, including a new logo.

A two-page summary with some applications of the new logo is available here: www.icoph.org/pdf/ICOlogocolors2010.pdf (PDF - 480 KB).

This new visual identity grew out of our plans for new technology, specifically a new ICO Web site. We contacted many of our members and colleagues to gather input on developing a new logo, colors and look for the ICO. I hope you will agree that it is fresh, modern and eye-catching. We will be gradually changing our communications to reflect the new identity and hope to launch the new Web site by June.

If you have a need for a specific logo file, or have any questions about the use of the new ICO identity, please write to ICO Communications Manager Monica Slater at mslater@icoph.org.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in this process, particularly the ICO Task Force on Identity who helped us shape some of the preliminary ideas last fall and the new ICO Communications Committee who provided valuable input in the final stages this spring. Many were involved in creating our new look, and I appreciate all of your contributions.

More than 6000 Registered for WOC 2010

Offering some 2,000 speakers in more than 700 scientific sessions, 1,120 posters, and with more than 6,000 ophthalmologists already registered (and more to come), the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC) June 5-9, 2010 in Berlin will be an outstanding opportunity for the world’s ophthalmologists to gather.

The final scientific program is now available on the WOC 2010 Web site: www.woc2010.org/scientific-program.

I hope you will encourage your society members and colleagues who have not registered to attend. For those of you who are in or near Europe, Northern Africa and Asia, you will not want to miss the chance to connect with, and learn from, some of the leading experts in ophthalmology near your own “neighborhood.”

Early bird registration rates are still available through May 10. Visit www.woc2010.org/registration to register. Hotel information and air and train transportation discounts are available here: www.woc2010.org/hotels-and-travel.

See you in Berlin!

A Fresh Format for the ICO General Assembly

I invite you to join us for stimulating presentations and a participatory discussion along with the formal business meeting that has been the tradition at the ICO General Assembly in years past.

Again, the ICO General Assembly will be Saturday, June 5 from 13:30 to 17:00 at the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC) 2010 in Berlin.

New this year, we will have a stimulating discussion on:

  • the future of international ophthalmology and the ICO
  • strategic priorities for improving eye
  • new horizons for ophthalmic education.

We will begin a new strategic planning process for the ICO at the General Assembly by asking for your feedback on the most valuable ICO programs, what our future focus should be, and how we can serve you more effectively. Official ICO Representatives will also vote on proposed revised statutes and elect members of the Board.

The complete agenda for the ICO General Assembly is available here: www.icoph.org/pdf/ICOGeneralAssemblyAgenda2010.pdf (PDF - 116 KB).

While the General Assembly is intended for ICO Representatives, we would also like to invite other leaders of our member societies to attend. We will offer an opportunity for each society to be involved, so please be sure that you are represented.

Estimating the Number of World Ophthalmologists

I sent a request in last month’s ICO Notes asking for your help obtaining the best possible data on the number of ophthalmologists in practice and in training in each country.

Thanks to the more than 40 countries who have already responded. If your society has not yet had a chance to respond, I would appreciate it if you could do so right away.

If your society did not receive the survey, please let me know (leader@icoph.org) and I will send it to you.

We deeply appreciate your help in obtaining this data so we can all advocate effectively for improving eye care.

With warm regards,
Bruce
