March 2011
Dear ICO Members and Friends,
A few reports and updates:
Registration is now open for the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC), February 16–20, 2012, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. We encourage all ICO member societies to participate and name a Representative to attend the ICO General Assembly on February 16.
As you know, the WOC only offers free registration for the Official Representative to the ICO from each Member society, so that each can participate in the ICO General Assembly.
Please let us know your Official ICO Representative for 2012 as soon as possible: send their name, e-mail address, country, and society name to info@icoph.org. We will then arrange Congress registration for the Official Representative.
Although WOC 2012 registration is now available at woc2012.org/register_online.html, we ask that Official ICO Representatives do not complete online registration. The ICO will work with Congress organizers to arrange free registration for your Official Representative. Again, please send an e-mail to info@icoph.org to let us know the name of your Official Representative as soon as you are able.
The WOC 2012 Scientific Program Committee is now inviting abstract submissions at: www.woc2012.org/call_for_papers.html.
Abstracts can be submitted for free papers, posters, videos or instruction courses, with a submission deadline of June 1, 2011. The Scientific Program Committee will then notify authors by July 15 if their submission was accepted. The registration deadline for presenters is August 30, 2011.
I would appreciate it if you would share this information with all of your society members through your e-mail or other communications.
The ICO is a co-sponsor of the 2011 Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress in Sydney, March 20-24. The final Congress program is now available at: www.apaosydney2011.com/Program.htm.
The ICO Board of Trustees will meet March 17–18, 2011, to continue the strategic planning process along with the usual business and discussion items. I would like to thank those of you who responded to my request for feedback on the draft ICO Strategic Plan. Your input is very important and we will incorporate your suggestions into our planning. I look forward to sharing our progress with you soon.
We will also be conducting our first Conference for Ophthalmic Educators co-sponsored by the APAO and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) on March 18 and 19. We have received a tremendous response, and registration is now closed, as we are completely full.
Finally, if you are planning to attend the APAO Congress in Sydney, please stop by the ICO Booth, #516, to say hello.
The ICO will also participate in the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) Congress, www.soe2011.org, June 4–7, 2011, in Geneva and the Pan-American Congress of Ophthalmology, www.paao2011buenosaires.org.ar, July 7–9, 2011, in Buenos Aires.
At the SOE Congress in Geneva the ICO will host a symposium, Eye Care in Africa. How can Europe help? organized by ICO Secretary General Jean-Jacques DeLaey, MD. Please see the forthcoming SOE program for more details.
The ICO will be conducting an Advocacy Workshop in Buenos Aires, which will be a half-day training session for all designated “Advocates” of national societies, tentatively scheduled for July 6, 2011, during the Pan-American Congress. More information and an invitation to this workshop will be coming soon.
With warm regards,

Bruce
