ICO Notes
Preliminary Approval on ICO Change in Statutes

November 2011

ICO President Bruce Spivey, MD, MS, MEd

Dear ICO Members and Friends,

1. Moving Forward on ICO Regulations and Statutes

I am pleased to report that the ICO Board of Trustees has voted to approve the revisions in ICO Regulations and Statutes needed to make the changes in governance called for in our new Strategic Plan, which has also been adopted by the Board.

Within the next week, we will send these items to Member Society Representatives to the ICO and Society Presidents:

– Notice of the General Assembly, from 14:00 to 17:00 on February 16, 2012, at the World Ophthalmology Congress® in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

– A copy of the proposed revised Statutes

– A copy of the revised Regulations that have been approved by the Board, for your reference

We will ask the General Assembly to approve the revisions in the Statutes so that we can move forward with the proposed governance changes, which include the selection of a CEO.

I thank you in advance for your support and trust in the recommendations the Board has advanced to assure the ICO’s continuity and future effectiveness.

2. Membership Dues Deadline January 1

To assure that a representative from every Member society can participate in the ICO General Assembly, the Congress offers each Member society a free WOC registration for their official Representative to the ICO.

To ensure your society is represented, it is vital that your ICO membership dues be received by the ICO no later than January 1, 2012.

If your dues are not received by January 1, we cannot provide free WOC registration for your ICO representative. This would be extremely unfortunate, so please return your dues payment as soon as possible. If you have not received an invoice, write to treasurer@icoph.org.

3. WOC 2012 Online Registration Ends Soon

With more that 500 scientific sessions, over 2,000 internationally recognized speakers and over 50 ophthalmologic societies represented, the WOC 2012 promises to be an exciting international educational opportunity you will not want to miss.

The scientific program is excellent, and the full, searchable scientific program is now available online at: www.woc2012.org/scientific_program.html.

The opportunity to pre-register online closes on December 15, 2011, so do not delay and register now by going to www.woc2012.org/register_online.html.

4. Tell Your Members Why They Should Attend the WOC 2012

I’ve outlined a few reasons why everyone should attend the WOC 2012 below. Please make sure your society members know about them!

  • Enjoy a comprehensive and innovative scientific program in a modern and colorful locale
  • Connect with a truly international community of like-minded individuals
  • Support critical ICO activities like our Fellowships and Conferences for Ophthalmic Educators with your registration fees
  • Attend community-building events, like the World Ophthalmic Education Colloquium, and the VISION 2020 World Forum for Sight.
  • Relish days that average 24°C/75°F in February, and take in culture, fine dining or spectacular beaches

These are all truly fantastic reasons to attend the WOC 2012. Send your members an email, include in a newsletter article or post an item on your Web site. Download our PDF to review ways your society can spread the word.

5. Thanks for Outstanding Support from Ophthalmic Societies!

The support for the WOC 2012 from ophthalmic societies has been outstanding, and the ICO would like to thank them for their involvement.

Among the societies that have featured WOC logos or links on their Web sites are the following:
