January 2010
Dear ICO Members and Friends,
Best wishes to you for a happy and healthy 2010. I send a request for assistance to those in Haiti, followed by a few reports and reminders:
The recent devastating earthquake in Haiti has affected millions. They are without food, water, and medical supplies.
The Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) has just created the Pan-American Haiti Relief Project. PAAO President Drs. Cristián Luco and Natalio Izquierdo, (project manager), will work closely with our Haitian colleagues and the Haitian Society of Ophthalmology to assess their needs and distribute funds and assistance accordingly.
The Pan-American Ophthalmological Foundation has made an initial pledge of US $10,000 to start this campaign.
To make your donation, visit the PAAO's secure Web page: www.paao.org/donateforhaiti.html. You may also send a check (from US banks only) to the Pan-American Haiti Relief Project, PAAO, 1301 South Bowen Road #365, Arlington TX 76013 USA.
100% of your donation will be dedicated to the Pan-American Haiti Relief Project. No administrative expenses will be removed.
I encourage you to donate what you can, either to the American Haiti Relief Project or other agencies that are providing support.
The ICO will be compiling information for the ICO Directory of Ophthalmologic Societies in time for the World Ophthalmology Congress this June. The Directory will list all of the national and international ophthalmologic societies in the world.
We recently sent an e-mail to those who are listed as contacts for the ICO database with complete instructions for updating your society's listing. The text of that message is available at archive.icoph.org/news/directory1001.html.
If your society's listing is not accurate, please update the database or send an e-mail to info@icoph.org with the correct information.
Would you let us know if your society did not receive this mailing, or if you have any questions about how to include the latest information on your society?
We look forward to including yours and all societies in the 2010 Directory of Ophthalmologic Societies.
January 31 is the application deadline to take the 2010 ICO Basic and Clinical Sciences Examinations, which will be offered on April 15.
As you may know, the Examinations are tests of knowledge to a very high international standard in Basic Science as applied to Ophthalmology, Optics & Refraction, and Clinical Sciences in Ophthalmology. For applications and information, please visit the ICO Examinations Web site: www.icoexams.org.
The new ICO Advanced Examination will be offered on October 21, 2010, and that application deadline is July 31, 2010.
Please share this information with your society and network.
Last December, the ICO Officers and I sent dues invoices to each ICO Member. For your reference, a copy of that mailing is available at: archive.icoph.org/news/ICODuesMailing2010.html.
If you have not yet made your society's 2010 ICO dues payment, please send your payment no later than January 31. You may make the payment by credit card, wire transfer, or check.
Instructions were provided on the invoice, but if your society did not receive the invoice and mailing, or if you have any questions, please contact treasurer@icoph.org. We will be happy to assist you.
As a reminder, the World Ophthalmology Congress offers free registration for the official Representative to the ICO from each member society so that every member can participate in the ICO General Assembly on June 5.
If you have not already done so, we ask that you select an official ICO Representative by January 31.
Please send their name, e-mail address, country, and society name to info@icoph.org. We will then arrange Congress registration for the official Representative. (Member societies must have paid their 2010 dues to receive this free registration.)
We look forward to having you and your society join us for this important worldwide meeting of ophthalmologists.
With warm regards,

Bruce
