Dear Colleagues:

Fritz

We are excited to send you this first issue of the "ICO Leader Letter," a brief, regular e-mail newsletter that the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) will send to leaders of ophthalmologic societies around the world.
The ICO Leader Letter is intended to provide news of ophthalmology and the ICO and resources that hopefully will be valuable to international leaders.
Please let me know how you think we could improve this letter by replying to this e-mail or sending a note to me at mailto:leader@icoph.org. Thank you very much in advance for your comments and criticisms.
Fritz Naumann, MD, ICO President
2. ICO Leaders Visit Residency Programs in Nigeria

Bruce
Spivey, MD

Several ICO leaders are currently touring Nigeria to meet with Nigerian ophthalmologists, visit residency programs and consider ways to enhance ophthalmological training throughout the world.
ICO Council Member Adenike Abiose has organized our visit, which will include stops in Abuja, Kaduna, Calabar, Lagos and Ibadan. Among those participating are Drs. Naumann, Gloor, Abiose and myself and ICO Council Members Daniel Etya’alé, Hannah Faal and Akef El Maghraby.
We were scheduled to meet with the Nigerian Minister of Health and participate in an April 3 symposium of the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria on “Improving the Quality and Relevance of Ophthalmological Training in Nigeria.”
Bruce Spivey, MD, ICO Secretary General
3. Evaluation of Sutureless Cataract Surgery for Reducing World Blindness
"Small Incision Cataract Surgery" is the focus of the latest issue of the Journal of Community Eye Health. The issue features articles on the principles and steps for sutureless cataract surgery, a report on a clinical trial of manual small incision surgery and a discussion of complications, management and learning curves.
In an editorial, Albrecht Hennig, MD, discusses the potential role of sutureless non-phaco cataract surgery in reducing world blindness.
Published by the International Centre for Eye Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Journal is available online at http://www.jceh.co.uk/.
4. ICO Symposium on Managing Cataract Blindness at American Academy
 |
|
Mark Tso, MD
|
Plan to attend an ICO symposium on "Innovation in Managing Cataract Blindness Worldwide" at 12:15 pm, Monday, October 25, 2004 at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Meeting in New Orleans.
The symposium will report on medical, technological, operational, and manpower innovations in managing cataract blindness from around the globe.
Speakers from different parts of the world will present the next generation of cataract techniques and discuss how to organize an efficient cataract surgery team to reduce costs.
Mark Tso, MD, ICO Vice President and Education Coordinator
5. Improving Women's Eye Health
In every part of the world, women have twice the risk as men of losing their vision.
To understand why, and to find remedies to begin to change this situation, the Boston-based Women's Eye Health Task Force hosted a symposium in November on "Improving women's eye health: Strategies to address the greater burden of blindness in women."
A report on the symposium is now available at: http://www.icoph.org/pdf/WEHTFSympSum.pdf
