1. Stimulating Continuing Education of Ophthalmologists
Dear Colleagues:
 |
|
Fritz
Naumann,
MD
|
Recent issues of the ICO Leader Letter focused on residency education (see www.icoph.org/news/leader0405.html) and teaching medical students about ophthalmology (www.icoph.org/news/leader0406.html).
This Letter highlights two programs sponsored by the International Council of Ophthalmology that we hope will stimulate and support continuing education:
- ICO International Clinical Guidelines
- International Congress of Ophthalmology.
Please let me know about other continuing education resources for ophthalmologists available through the Internet that we may want to mention in the Leader Letter or link to on the ICO Eye Site. You can contact me at leader@icoph.org. Thank you.
Fritz Naumann, MD, ICO President
2. Pilot Project To Encourage Use of Clinical Guidelines in China
 |
|
Rich Abbott,
MD
|
Ten of the ICO's International Clinical Guidelines are being translated into Chinese, and the Guidelines Committee is considering other pilot projects to increase awareness and use of the Guidelines by practicing ophthalmologists.
Professor Jialiang Zhao, of the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, is providing outstanding leadership for translation of 10 Guidelines and for teaching practicing ophthalmologists in China how to incorporate them into practice.
We would very much appreciate anything else that ophthalmologic leaders can do to inform ophthalmologists about the Guidelines. Please send your comments to Task Force Chair Richard Parrish, MD, at medical@icoph.org. Thank you in advance for your feedback.
Richard Abbott, MD, ICO Council Member and Guidelines Coordinator
3. Eighteen ICO Clinical Guidelines Available, Societies Invited To Submit Theirs
The 18 ICO Clinical Guidelines currently available are listed at: www.icoph.org/guide/guidelist.html.
The Guidelines on cataract and macular degeneration have been updated since they were originally posted. Other subjects include: amblyopia, bacterial keratitis, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye, glaucoma and vitreous detachment.
More will be added in the coming year.
The Guidelines Committee welcomes the submission of national, supranational and subspecialty society clinical guidelines for review and possible addition to the ICO Web site. To submit your guidelines, contact me at guidelines@icoph.org.
Richard Abbott, MD, ICO Council Member and Guidelines Coordinator
4. ICO Asks Societies to Publicize XXX International Congress in São Paulo
 |
|
XXX International Congress Logo
|
The ICO has asked national and international societies to include a link to the Web site of the XXX International Congress of Ophthalmology (www.ophthalmology2006.com.br) on their society Web sites and to publicize the Congress to their members in other ways.
To download a Congress logo, and for instructions on how to set up a link, see: www.icoph.org/congress.
The Congress is scheduled February 20 - 24, 2006 in São Paulo, Brazil, the week before Carnival. It is co-sponsored by the Council, Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology and the Conselho Brasileiro de Oftalmologia.
Please mark your calendars and plan to join us in São Paulo!
Rubens Belfort, MD, ICO Council Member and President of the XXX Congress
5. Listing of Ophthalmologic Societies and Residencies on the Eye Site
To facilitate and support communication and cooperation among ophthalmologic societies, the ICO maintains a database of information on national, supranational and international societies and residency programs.
You can search for information on any society or residency through the ICO's Eye Site at: www.icoph.org/soc/ifos.cfm.
6. ICO To Publish “Directory of International Ophthalmology”
 |
|
Bruce
Spivey, MD
|
The ICO will publish the information from the database in a "Directory of International Ophthalmology" later this year and send it to all members of the International Federation of Ophthalmologic Societies (IFOS).
We have sent a mailing to all societies listed in the database asking them to update their information by August 1.
Please check at www.icoph.org/soc/ifos.cfm to assure that our information on your society is accurate. If it is not, please contact your society or follow the directions at www.icoph.org/soc/update.cfm.
A user name and password is required to update the listings, and we can send that to an official society representative if you do not have it.
If you are a member of a society that is not listed, you can add it at www.icoph.org/soc/addsociety.cfm (no user name or password required).
Thank you for helping us to make the "Directory of International Ophthalmology" accurate and up-to-date.
If you have questions, contact me at spivey@icoph.org.
Bruce Spivey, MD, ICO Secretary-General
