1. August 10 Deadline To Update Society and Residency Information
Dear Colleagues:
 |
|
Fritz
Naumann,
MD
|
Thanks to all those who have updated the information on your ophthalmologic societies and residency programs in the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) database.
We have extended the deadline to August 10. Changes must be made by that date in order for accurate information to be included in the "Directory of International Ophthalmology" that we will publish later this year.
Please check at www.icoph.org/soc/ifos.cfm to assure that your information is up-to-date. If it is not, see www.icoph.org/soc/database.html#review for directions on how to change your listings.
If you have questions or need help, contact Secretary General Bruce Spivey, MD, at mailto:spivey@icoph.org. Thank you for helping to keep our listings up-to-date.
Fritz Naumann, MD, ICO President
2. Outstanding Course for Residency Program Directors in Mexico
The Ophthalmology Program Directors Course in Mexico City on June 17 and 18 was a great success and is an excellent model for ophthalmologic societies in other countries.
There were more than 80 participants, including an international faculty and residency program directors from 20 residency programs throughout Mexico.
Topics discussed included: resident selection, program accreditation, academic curriculum, teaching in the operating room and clinic supervision, evaluation, and certification of residents.
Organized by Enrique Graue, MD, a member of the Advisory Committee to the ICO, and his colleagues from the Mexican Council of Ophthalmology, the course was stimulated by the ICO's efforts to enhance education of ophthalmology residents and supported in part by the ICOFoundation.
For more information, contact Dr. Graue at: mailto:egrauew@yahoo.com.
- Bradley R. Straatsma, MD, JD, ICO Council Member

The Implementation Pack includes:
- World Sight Day 2004 Goals
- Suggested Activities
- Basic Guidelines for Targeting Media
- Declaration of Support
Please let us know (mailto:leader@icoph.org) how you recognize World Sight Day and about other preservation of vision programs sponsored by your society.

Bruce

Members of the International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies (IFOS) are asked to let me know your official representative who will be at the IFOS General Assembly, if you haven't already done so. Please send me an e-mail at mailto:spivey@icoph.org.
IFOS, for which the ICO is the executive body, will meet from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. on October 23, 2004 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, prior to the joint meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and European Ophthalmological Society (SOE).
IFOS is currently composed of national ophthalmologic societies, but will consider amendments to its statutes that would allow subspecialty and other ophthalmologic societies to become members.
For more details on the IFOS meeting, see: www.icoph.org/soc. If you have questions, contact me at mailto:spivey@icoph.org.
