1. Ophthalmology at the IAPB General Assembly
Dear Colleagues:

Fritz
Naumann,
MD
|
Ophthalmologists played a prominent role at the Seventh General Assembly of the International Society for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in Dubai from September 20 to 24.
At the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) symposium, 10 speakers from around the world discussed the participation of ophthalmology in Vision 2020: The Right To Sight (www.v2020.org).
Our good friend Hannah Faal, MD, completed her service as president of IAPB and was duly recognized for all that she has contributed to preservation of vision internationally. Nag Rao, MD, is the new president of IAPB and will therefore replace Hannah on the ICO.
We will miss Hannah and her thoughtful and creative contributions to ICO meetings and initiatives, but we look forward to continued collaboration with Nag and IAPB/Vision 2020.
We were saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Lalit P. Agarwal, a former member of the ICO and visionary leader of ophthalmology and control of blindness in India.
Fritz Naumann, MD, ICO President

The Japanese Ophthalmological Society has offered to fund several IFOS/ICO Fellowships for young ophthalmologists, mainly from Asian countries, to study in Japan.
ICO Secretary General Bruce Spivey, MD, thanked the Japanese society and its members "...on behalf of all of our colleagues and Asian students who are going to benefit from your generosity and hospitality."
"This is wonderful news and should serve as an example to other ophthalmological societies around the world," said ICO President Fritz Naumann, MD.
The IFOS/ICO Fellowships were organized to help young ophthalmologists, especially those from developing nations, improve their practical skills and broaden their perspectives of ophthalmology.
Fellows are expected to bring the acquired knowledge and skills back to their country of origin and take part in programs to preserve and restore vision in their country. We have recently added new IFOS/ICO Fellowships in Chennai (India), London and Utrecht. Fellowships are now offered by 53 institutions in 23 countries.

6. Societies in India and Nigeria Work on "Twinning"

Pran

Inspired by the visit of ICO leaders to Nigeria this spring (see www.icoph.org/news/leader0405.html), the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) and the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria (OSN) are developing an agreement for twinning.
Twinning is sustained mutual contact between organizations for the benefit of both. For the AOIS and OSN, this involves members of each society attending the annual meetings of the other in order to improve the meetings.
While the agreement still awaits official ratification by the AIOS, the exchange has already begun. Dr. Darshin Bavishi, FRCS, from Ahmedabad, participated in the recent OSN Annual Meeting in Calabar, and the AIOS hopes to host two OSN members at its Annual Meeting in January. The AIOS would also welcome twinning with other organizations in the English-speaking world. For more on twinning, see: www.icoph.org/soc/twin.html or contact me at manishad1@sancharnet.in.
