1. Please Send Me Your Comments on the Leader Letter

Dear Colleagues:

Fritz Naumann, MD
Fritz
Naumann,
MD
It will soon be one year since we sent the first International Council of Ophthalmology ICO Leader Letter to ophthalmologic leaders around the world.

The Leader Letter is intended to provide news of international ophthalmology and the ICO and highlight resources that we hope will be valuable to leaders. You can read previous letters at: www.icoph.org/news/letters.html.

I would like to hear your feedback. We do need your echo and particularly your criticism:

What do you like about the Leader Letter?

What could be improved?

How could we make it of more value to you?

Please send me your comments and criticisms by replying to this e-mail or sending a note to leader@icoph.org. Thank you very much in advance.

- Fritz Naumann, MD, ICO President

2. Council To Meet May 11 in Florence

Bruce Spivey, MD

Guidelines for the continuing professional development of ophthalmologists and international vision standards for driving will be on the agenda when the ICO meets in Florence on May 11.

The Advisory Committee to the Council and other ICO Committees meet on May 10 and Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis on May 12, prior to the 3rd International Congress of the Italian Society of Ophthalmology (SOI) (www.soiweb.com/news_reader.php?id=296).

Also on the agenda for the Council:

  • Follow-up on efforts to enhance residency training in Nigeria

  • The first report of the Committee on Countries with Minimal Ophthalmic Presence

  • Selection of recipients for the historic Gonin, Duke Elder and Jules Francois medals and new Ophthalmic Pathology Award, which will be presented at the opening ceremonies of the World Ophthalmology Congress, February 20, 2006 in São Paulo, Brazil.

- Bruce Spivey, MD, ICO Secretary General

3. ICO To Define Subspecialty Society Membership in IFOS

When it meets in Florence in May, the Council will also consider proposed criteria for accepting ophthalmologic subspecialty societies into the International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies (IFOS). (The ICO is the executive body of IFOS.)

Because subspecialty societies play an increasingly important role in ophthalmology and eye care around the word, IFOS voted in 2004 to expand its membership. Previously only the primary national society of ophthalmologists in each country was eligible to join IFOS.

Advisory Committee Member Emilio Campos, MD, chairs a committee that will recommend criteria for determining which societies should be eligible to join IFOS.

We also hope to define an application process and timing that will allow new IFOS members to participate in the next IFOS General Assembly, February 20, 2006 in São Paulo, Brazil.

We look forward to welcoming the new member societies of IFOS, so that they stimulate our activities to improve our profession! The new members shall have the same rights - and also obligations - as the old established membership.

Future ICO and IFOS meetings are listed at www.icoph.org/lead/icomeet.html.

- Fritz Naumann, MD, ICO President

4. CYBER-SIGHT: Online Ophthalmic Education from ORBIS

Mark Tso, MD
Mark Tso,
MD

ORBIS has developed an impressive initiative in telemedicine and online educational resource for ophthalmologists called CYBER-SIGHT (telemedicine.orbis.org/bins/home.asp).

CYBER-SIGHT offers educational materials on eye and vision related topics, an e-learning and e-consultation program, featured cases and a question of the week, with previous questions archived.

There is also a feature called an "Ophthalmology Minute," brief, informal discussions of eye care topics, such as neuro-ophthalmology, ophthalmic nursing and pediatric low vision.

Eugene Helveston, MD, ORBIS ophthalmologist in chief, leads the development of CYBER-SIGHT.

- Mark Tso, MD, ICO Vice President and Education Coordinator

5. News from the Asia Pacific and Pan-American Congresses

ICO Advisory Committee Member Yasuo Tano, MD, was elected President of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology during its Congress, March 27 - 31 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Another Advisory Committee Member, Enrique Graue, MD, became President of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) at the XXV Pan-American Congress of Ophthalmology, March 18 - 21 in Santiago, Chile. Council Member Richard Abbott, MD, was named PAAO president-elect.

Both "supranational" society Congresses featured a strong scientific base and were well run and attended, with wonderful social events, including a dinner in Kuala Lumpur with the King of Malaysia.

There was also an excellent turnout for the ICO symposium on "Innovations in Managing Cataract Blindness Worldwide" on March 29 in Kuala Lumpur. Thanks to all those who participated.

- Bruce Spivey, MD, ICO Secretary General
