1. A Critical Challenge for Ophthalmology: Enhancing Training

Dear Colleagues:

Bruce Spivey, MD
Bruce
Spivey, MD
More than a dozen members of the International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies (IFOS) have already scheduled the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) presentation on "Enhancing Training To Meet the Public Need for Eye Care" at their next Congress.

They include national societies in India, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Philippines, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, and the United States, as well as the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology and South East Asia Glaucoma Interest Group (SEAGIG).

We appreciate this positive response to the request from ICO Director for Advocacy Hugh Taylor, MD, (www.icoph.org/news/ifos0609training.html) and hope other societies will do the same.

We are sending the IFOS Representative who will make each presentation an ICO/IFOS USB flash drive (which you plug into a USB port on a computer) with slides and a variety of resources for improving training. You can download the presentations and resources at www.icoph.org/training/resources.html.

We know that many societies are already deeply involved in initiatives to improve training, and we would like to report on those in the ICO Leader Letter. Please let me know about your efforts to enhance training so that we can share them with others. You can do that by replying to this letter.

- Bruce Spivey, MD, ICO President

2. Societies Define Clinical Practice Guidelines

Rich Abbott, MD
Rich Abbott,
MD

The Chinese Ophthalmological Society (COS) made its Preferred Practice Patterns and Process of Care Practice Guidelines available to members in a bound text at its third International Ophthalmology Congress in September in Beijing.

The COS developed the Guidelines over the course of two years based on the American Academy of Ophthalmology Preferred Practice Patterns and ICO International Clinical Guidelines, as described at www.icoph.org/guide/china.html.

The COS Guidelines will be implemented first in hospitals and eye departments in the large cities in China. We are organizing a follow-up study to evaluate their use and ultimate impact on practice patterns.

The Korean Ophthalmological Society is also very interested in practice guidelines, and we are working with one of the teaching hospitals in Seoul to conduct an evaluation of current clinical practice patterns in South Korea as a first step. Plans are also being defined for adaptation of the ICO Clinical Guidelines in India.

There will be symposia and workshops on defining clinical practice guidelines at the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology Congress in Cancun, Mexico at the end of May next year (apaocancun.org.mx) and at the European Ophthalmological Society (SOE) congress in Vienna in June (www.soe2007.org).

If you are interested in adapting the ICO Guidelines for use in your country, please contact me at guidelines@icoph.org.

We are working on new Guidelines on childhood glaucomas, optic neuritis, ptosis, thyroid ophthalmopathy, oncherocerciasis and HIV. If you would be interested in contributing to any of these Guidelines, please let me know at guidelines@icoph.org.

4. Naumann Award Nomination Deadline Is November 15

Fritz Naumann, MD
Fritz
Naumann,
MD

A reminder that November 15 is the deadline for members of IFOS to submit nominations for the G.O.H. Naumann Award for Leadership in Global Eye Care to supranational ophthalmologic societies.

The Council established the Naumann Award in February to honor Fritz Naumann, MD, who served as ICO President from 1998 to 2006. It will be given each year to an ophthalmologist who, acting as a leader of a national or supranational ophthalmologic society that is a member of IFOS, has made a significant contribution to global eye care.

The emphasis is not on clinical or scientific achievements but on development of educational programs or other initiatives that can serve as models for other societies. Members of the Council and its Advisory Committee are not eligible for the Award.

Please send a summary of the achievements of the nominee and his or her CV to leadership@icoph.org.

The ICO will pay travel and hotel expenses for the Awardee to participate in the Council meeting in March in Cape Town, South Africa. The Awardee will be asked to report to the Council on the initiative that he or she has led and how it may be implemented by other societies.

For more, see: www.icoph.org/ic/naumannaward.html. Thank you for your nominations.

- Akef El Maghraby, MD, ICO Vice President
