Dear Colleagues:

This ICO Leader Letter focuses on the upcoming World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC)®, June 28 - July 2 in Hong Kong, with the latest news and reports on some of the sessions we believe will be of great interest.
The Congress will without doubt be an historic event, if only because the International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies (IFOS) will vote on becoming the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO).
I very much look forward to greeting those of you who will be there. Our July issue will feature a comprehensive report.
- Bruce Spivey, MD, ICO President
2. Registration for the WOC Tops 11,000
I am looking forward to welcoming many of you to Hong Kong very soon for the 2008 World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC)®, June 28 - July 2.
More than 9500 ophthalmologists have registered, with other participants pushing total registration past 11,000. Online registration is closed, but you can still register onsite, starting at noon on June 27, in the Convention Foyer of Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).
With major contributions from many of you, we have developed an outstanding scientific program that will feature more than 1500 speakers in 250 scientific sessions covering 28 subspecialty areas in ophthalmology. For details, see:
www.woc2008hongkong.org/woc/index03_4.shtml
Some expected highlights of the WOC include:

There is a speaker log in page at www.woc2008hongkong.org/woc/index11_2.shtml and instructions for speakers at www.woc2008hongkong.org/woc/index03_12.shtml. We request that you submit your slides online or in the Speaker Ready Room at least a day before the presentation. When you do, we will add a declaration of financial interest.

4. ICO WORLD and IFOS General Assembly on June 27
Leaders of ophthalmologic societies and training programs who will be in Hong Kong are encouraged to participate in the ICO's World Ophthalmology Roundtable on Leadership Development (WORLD) from 13:30 to 15:45 on June 27 in Room 401 of the HKCEC.
The Roundtable will feature presentations on a new model for the ICO in the future and selected innovative educational, advocacy and leadership development programs. But the focus will be on hearing from ophthalmologic leaders about effective programs in your area, resources available and how we might help.
The WORLD Roundtable will be followed at 16:00 on June 27 by the General Assembly of the International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies (IFOS) in Room 601. IFOS will consider proposed Statutes that would change the name of the organization to the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO). If approved, IFOS member societies will become members of the ICO and the Council will become the Board of Trustees. Only official representatives of IFOS member societies can vote at the General Assembly but others may attend as guests. We have asked all IFOS Representatives to participate in the WORLD Roundtable first.
The Council will also meet in Hong Kong as will its Advisory Committee and various ICO committees and task forces.

The ICO's G.O.H. Naumann Award for Leadership in Global Eye Care will be presented during the Council meeting in Hong Kong to Dr. BGK Ajayi in recognition of his contributions to improving ophthalmic training and prevention of blindness in his native Nigeria and beyond.
Established in 2006 in honor of ICO Past President Fritz Naumann, MD, the Award will be presented annually to an ophthalmologist who, acting as a leader of a supranational, national or subspecialty society, has made a significant contribution to global eye care.
Dr. Ajayi led a major change in direction and focus for the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria (OSN) when he was President from 2001 to 2005, including obtaining the assistance of international bodies for enhancing residency training. During his tenure, the OSN published a strategic plan, "Vision for the Future - Nigeria," and established an OSN Foundation to support implementation of the plan.
The ICO Golden Apple Award for the Best Teacher in Clinical Ophthalmology in the Asia-Pacific Region 2008 will be presented to Dr. Ronald L.S. Yeoh, a Senior Consultant at the Singapore National Eye Center.
As previously announced, the following ICO Medals will be presented during the WOC Opening Ceremonies on June 28:
- the Tadeusz Krwawicz Gold Medal to Douglas R. Anderson, MD, professor at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami
