Happy New Year! 2010 is finally here and with much enthusiasm and anticipation, we look forward to the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC), June 5-9 in Berlin.
The WOC is a first-class worldwide event, with an outstanding program, top speakers, the latest in practice, exhibits of the newest ophthalmic drugs and equipment, and participants from countries throughout the world.
Now is the time to make your plans to attend this important gathering of world ophthalmologists. You can take advantage of the early bird rate and register before February 9. Visit the WOC 2010 Web site: www.woc2010.org/information-for-participants/online-registration.html, to complete your registration.
The true magic of the World Congress is the mixing of cultures, people, and ideas. I hope you will join us and share the news of the World Congress with your colleagues and connections so we can make WOC 2010 the best World Congress yet.

Berlin is a city of science, technology, innovation and invention. It is also the city of Hermann von Helmholtz and Albrecht von Graefe, two great men whose work has inspired generations of ophthalmologists.
It is in this spirit that we bring the world's experts in ophthalmology together at WOC 2010 to share recent developments and their latest contributions in the scientific program. Over 3,000 speakers from around the world will present a wide variety of topics in more than 600 sessions.
We are fortunate so many outstanding ophthalmologists will participate in the 2010 WOC scientific program. The culmination of their efforts will be impressive.
We have also planned an excellent subspecialty program with subspecialty days in cataract surgery, refractive surgery, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology, and retina. More details will be available in the WOC 2010 advance program, due to be released January 31.
I look forward to seeing you at what will be a truly outstanding World Congress in Berlin this June.
- Steve Ryan, MD, WOC 2010 Scientific Program Committee Chair
3. Experience Berlin and WOCtoberfest
The vibrant and cosmopolitan city of Berlin invites you not only for its science but to show you its dynamic personality. It is a perfect location for this highly prestigious world congress.
After taking in the WOC scientific program, you will have plenty of time to explore and enjoy Berlin. The city offers of a host of cultural events, a unique architectural landscape, spectacular shopping venues, many bars and restaurants offering German and international cuisine, and a vibrant nightlife.
Meet old friends and make new ones at the Bavarian-style "WOCtoberfest," Monday, June 7 from 19:00-24:00. You and your family will be treated to a lively intercultural evening with traditional Octoberfest brass band music, beer and Bavarian specialties (there will also be non-alcoholic drinks and vegetarian food).

- Innovative Approaches to Addressing Cataract, Glaucoma, and Diabetic Retinopathy in the Developing World
