The ICO invites our colleagues attending Pan-American Congress of Ophthalmology 2019 to join us for an ICO Reception on the evening of Sunday, 26 May for light refreshments and conversation. Read on for more details and to RSVP. We look forward to seeing you there!

Join us at the Hyatt Ziva Cancun Hotel room Tikal on 26 May from 17:30-19:00 for an ICO Educator Reception. Enjoy light refreshments, learn about ICO education programs, and meet with friends and other educators. The reception is open to anyone interested in ophthalmic education or other ICO programs. However, space is limited, so please RSVP at the link below to let us know you will be attending.

ICO Educator Sessions at SOE

The ICO has co-organized 3 sessions for educators at the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) Congress this year. All registered attendees of SOE may participate in the educator sessions and are invited to attend the ICO Reception.

Thursday, 13 June:

Friday, 14 June:

  • ICO Reception 17:30-19:00 in Agora 3.

Sunday, 16 June:

  • (EDU-S62) Competencies of a Good XXI Century Educator 08:00-09:30 in Gallieni 5.
  • (EDU-S65) Keeping Your Teaching Up to Date 10:00-11:30 in Gallieni 5.

ICO Resources Available for Download

These ICO Resources have been developed and reviewed by subspecialists and ophthalmic educators around the globe, and are meant to be adaptable to training programs in any country. All ICO resources are available for download free of charge.

The ICO Residency Curriculum is available in English, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, and Chinese. In addition, the ICO offers 5 subspecialty curricula and an ophthalmic educator curriculum outline:

  • Cornea, External Diseases, and Refractive Surgery (Supported by the Alcon Foundation, STAAR Surgical, and Zeimer Ophthalmic Systems AG)
  • Glaucoma (Supported by Aerie Pharmaceuticals and Glaukos Corporation)

The ICO Ophthalmology Surgical Competency Assessment Rubrics (ICO-OSCARs) are standardized, internationally-validated behavioral and skill-based rubrics. The ICO-OSCAR allows the evaluator to objectively assess the resident’s competence in performing a specific procedure. This can also be used by the resident as a tool to better gauge their own performance. ICO-OSCARs are available for:

  • Ptosis
  • Extracapsular Cataract Extraction
  • Phacoemulsification (Supported by the Alcon Foundation)
  • Pediatric Cataract Surgery
  • Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) (Supported by ASICO)
  • Strabismus
  • Lateral Tarsal Strip Surgery
  • Trabeculectomy
  • Vitrectomy (Supported by the Alcon Foundation)

Selected ICO-OSCARs are also available in Mandarin Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

ICO 360º Assessment Tool: http://www.icoph.org/360

The ICO 360° Assessment is a multi-source feedback tool to assess and provide feedback to residents regarding their competence in “soft skills” such as interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and system-based practice. The ICO recommends 360-degree assessments for evaluations.

ICO Guide to Effective Continuing Professional Development/Continuing Medical Education (CPD/CME): http://www.icoph.org/ICO-CPD-CME.html

The ICO Guide to Effective CPD/CME is designed as a practical guide to the concepts of CPD, CME, and common questions. The guide covers CPD/CME concepts, the individual’s role, the educator’s role, organizational development of CPD, and the regulator’s role.

WOC2020: 26–29 June 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa

The World Ophthalmology Congress® of the International Council of Ophthalmology will include a scientific program of over 350 sessions addressing all subspecialties and related interests in ophthalmology. Revenues from the WOC help support ICO programs, including ophthalmic education, society and leadership development, and advocacy.
