Ophthalmic Educators Letter

August 2019

The International Council of Ophthalmology invites all attendees of the 2019 Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO) Congress in Dead Sea, Jordan to attend our ICO Educator sessions on Friday and Saturday, 6–7 September. Please continue reading for more information on these sessions. Additionally, a new Spanish translation of the ICO Ophthalmic Educators Curriculum Outline is available in this issue.

ICO Sessions for Educators at MEACO

The ICO has organized several symposia and workshops for educators at this year’s Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology Congress in Dead Sea, Jordan. Sessions are scheduled for 9:00–12:30 Friday, 6 September in Hall 10, and 9:00–10:30, Saturday, 7 September in Hall 5.

ICO Sessions will cover tools for improving the way you assess performance, develop a modern curriculum, and improve your teaching in lectures, the clinic, and the operating room. The MEACO program also has education-focused sessions for young ophthalmologists on Sunday, 8 September, including sessions on how to write a scientific paper, leadership training programs, and prevention of blindness.

Sessions are open to all registered participants of MEACO 2019.

2019 ICO Conference for Educators

The next ICO Conference for Ophthalmic Educators will take place on Saturday, 12 October 2019 from 14:00–17:30, during the American Academy of Ophthalmology's (AAO) Annual Meeting in San Francisco, USA. The Conference is intended for anyone interested in education or in improving their own teaching skills.

The Conference is open to all AAO registrants at no additional charge. Participants will have the option to choose from the following workshops:

  • Surgical Instruction
  • Backward Design in Curriculum Development
  • Giving Good Feedback
  • Mentorship: An Important Tool in Professional Development
  • Teaching for Understanding
  • Faculty Evaluation

ICO Ophthalmic Educators Curriculum Outline in Spanish

The ICO Ophthalmic Educators Curriculum Outline is now available in Spanish. This outline aims to provide ophthalmic educators with a clear path to becoming competent in ophthalmic education practices and is especially useful for new educators and those interested in teaching ophthalmic educators.
