Ophthalmic Educators Letter

Do not miss the opportunity to participate in our fifth Conference for Ophthalmic Educators in Copenhagen on Friday, June 7. If you plan to attend the European Society of Ophthalmology Congress in Denmark, we encourage you to attend our one-day Conference for Ophthalmic Educators on “Medical Teaching: Improving Effectiveness and Efficiency.” 

The Copenhagen Conference includes workshops such as developing assessment rubrics and creating effective multiple-choice questions. Plenary sessions and workshops will cover e-learning, online resources, and creating webinars. Please review the final agenda for more details.

This conference is organized and co-sponsored by the ICO, the European Society of Ophthalmology, and the Danish Ophthalmological Society.

Register Now: Rio de Janeiro Conference for Ophthalmic Educators

Register now for the Tuesday, August 6, 2013 Rio de Janeiro Conference for Ophthalmic Educators.

The conference will offer short lectures and interactive, practical workshops on educational topics such as “Teaching and Assessing Surgery” and “Professionalism and Communication Skills.” All plenary sessions and select workshops during this valuable, one-day conference will be offered with simultaneous translation in Portuguese, Spanish, and English.

The conference is being held prior to the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) Congress and is co-sponsored by the ICO, the PAAO, and the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology.

Registration includes lunch and light refreshments. A Certificate of Attendance will be provided at the conclusion of the Conference.

The resource, 50 Free Online Tools for Teachers, is a list of online tools, based on a presentation from the Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo and Conference (PETE & C). Each resource includes a brief description, what type of tool it is, and a link to the tool’s website.

Dulaney Foundation Hosts Ophthalmology Update Course

The Ophthalmology Update Course by the Dulaney Foundation is a continuing medical education course accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the American Medical Association. The course’s primary focus is on ocular surface and glaucoma. A detailed statement of need is presented, and clear and measurable learning objectives are described. A self-assessment procedure and instructions on getting credits for participating in this activity are detailed.

This resource requires creating a username and password for the Dulaney Foundation website.

The Use of Real Patients, Simulated Patients, and Simulators in Clinical Examinations

The Use of Real Patients, Simulated Patients, and Simulators in Clinical Examinations medical education guide from the Association for Medical Education in Europe provides suggested guidelines for the use of both real and simulated patients in clinical examinations. The guide also discusses the benefits and disadvantages of each type of simulated patient or simulator.

The EyePathologist

The EyePathologist is a web-based instructional environment on the anatomy and pathology of the eye from Duke University Medical Center. The EyePathologist includes a database of more than 5,000 diseases, illustrated with over 4,000 high quality images, and links to a glossary of over 6,000 linked definitions.

This resource requires creating a username and password for the EyePathologist website.
