Ophthalmic Educators Letter

We are pleased to announce the upcoming Conference for Ophthalmic Educators: Improving Teaching Effectiveness, which will be held during the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting on October 18, 2014. We look forward to your joining us– either for the first time or again– to participate in new workshops and discussion groups for ophthalmic educators and those interested in education.

Next Conference for Ophthalmic Educators: Chicago October 18, 2014

If you plan to attend the American Academy of Ophthalmology's (AAO) Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, USA this October, we hope you will join us for the next Conference for Ophthalmic Educators, "Improving Teaching Effectiveness"  from 2–5:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2014. The Conference features new workshops and is designed to help educators from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of experience to improve their teaching effectiveness– including educators of ophthalmology residents, fellows, medical students, continuing medical education or professional development, and allied personnel.

During this time, you will have the opportunity to participate in workshops on various topics and group discussions. Workshops such as, “Presenting on the Web: How to Develop Successful Webinars” will demonstrate how to easily set-up and conduct a webinar to help expand your reach outside of face-to-face teaching.

The workshop “Effective Structured Feedback & Resident Remediation” will include discussion of the importance of feedback, models for providing feedback, and participant practice of effective feedback models. The conference is organized and co-sponsored by the ICO, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the European Society of Ophthalmology.

In addition to the Conference for Ophthalmic Educators, there will be three complementary courses sponsored by the ICO during AAO2014.

  • Course 607– Presentation Skills: How to Improve the Effectiveness of Lectures on Sunday, October 19, 2-3pm. 
  • Lab 138– How to use Free Technology to Add Interactivity to Face-to-Face Lectures and Presentations on Monday, October 20, 11:30am-12:30pm
  • Course 606– Resident, Faculty and Program Assessment: Principles and Best Practices on Monday, October 20, 4:30-5:30pm

Atlas of Ophthalmology

The Atlas of Ophthalmology is an online database of images, podcasts and videos endorsed by the International Council of Ophthalmology. It is free to access and available in multiple languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. AUPO Annual Meeting Slides and Recordings Available

Presentations from the 2014 Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO) Annual Meeting and Educating the Educators sessions are now available. Select presentations from the 2012 and 2013 meetings are also available.

Please visit the “What’s New at AUPO” page, and select “2014, 2013 Annual Meeting and Educating the Educators Presentations” to access the material. There is no charge to access these presentations, but you will be prompted to create a free user account.

Ophthalmology Guidelines from the College of French University Ophthalmologists

The College of French University Ophthalmologists has provided ophthalmology guidelines for use by students and teachers of ophthalmology, “Polycopié National du Collège des Ophtalmologistes Universitaires de France.” Intended to ensure a uniform and coherent education in all medical schools, the guidelines are organized in 24 chapters.

The guidelines were updated in 2010 and are available in French on the French Society of Ophthalmology’s website. The document can be downloaded in full or by individual sections.

ATPO Certification Review Flashcards

The Association of Technical Personnel in Ophthalmology (ATPO) offers review flashcards to assist candidates in preparing for certification exams. Flashcards are available for the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, Certified Ophthalmic Technician, Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist, Surgical Assisting, and Registered Ophthalmic Ultrasound Biometrist exams. The review flashcards are available from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) Bookstore.

Nursing Core Competencies from Orbis Cyber-Sight in English and Spanish

A series of rubrics are available from Orbis Cyber-Sight in English and Spanish for evaluating various nursing competencies, such as care of cannulated instruments, circulation nurse, cleaning of anaesthetic semi-critical items, and instrument wrapping.

EACCME Accreditation of Live Educational Events

The European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) has recently reviewed and updated the accreditation criteria for live educational events (LEE) to ensure the quality of continuing medical education and continuing professional development activities. The downloadable document includes the essential criteria to achieve accreditation from EACCME. Information and criteria for e-learning materials are also available.

Ophthalmology Teachers Library: Structured Curricula

The Ophthalmology Teachers Library blog reviews the Middle East African Journal of Ophthalmology (MEAJO) article, “Structured Curricula and Curriculum Development in Ophthalmology Residency,” by Drs. Andrew G. Lee and Ying Chen.

The article provides an overview of the shift to more curriculum-based and competency-driven graduate education, describes examples of these shifts and outlines a step by step plan for implementation of an ophthalmology curriculum.

WOC2020: 26–29 June 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa

The World Ophthalmology Congress® of the International Council of Ophthalmology will include a scientific program of over 350 sessions addressing all subspecialties and related interests in ophthalmology. Revenues from the WOC help support ICO programs, including ophthalmic education, society and leadership development, and advocacy.
