In a unanimous vote by mail ballot, the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) Board of Trustees elected Bill Felch to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for a five-year term, effective May 1, 2012.

"Bill is a dedicated, knowledgeable professional who has the experience and capability necessary to help lead our organization," said Bruce Spivey, MD, ICO President.

Dr. Spivey went on to say that the Search Committee had conducted an extensive search for a CEO, but could not find a candidate who met all the qualifications.

"Finally, it was suggested that it was not critical to have an ophthalmologist serve as CEO," said Dr. Spivey.

The Search Committee noted that Mr. Felch met all the other qualifications and asked him to apply.  He was interviewed by the Committee in mid-April and the election vote was held in late April.

Before coming to the ICO in 2007 as Executive Director, Mr. Felch served as Director of Communications for the American Society of Internal Medicine, and spent 16 years in key positions at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, including Vice President for Planning and Research. Mr. Felch subsequently worked for 12 years as an organizational development and communications consultant. He has facilitated strategic planning for more than 40 international, national, and local eye care and health care organizations, including the ICO in 1993, 1999-2000 and 2006.
