Posted on May 28, 2012
Topic: Allied Health Education, ICO Programs and Initiatives, Ophthalmic Educators

The ICO Strategic Plan addresses head on the necessity to focus on training teams of eye care professionals to meet the ophthalmic needs of their communities. One step in that direction was the National Training the Trainers of Allied Health Personnel workshop held at the Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology in Islamabad on January 6, 2012.

The workshop’s goal is to promote allied health personnel education in ophthalmology by providing good practices from existing teaching models, by sharing and modifying existing teaching tools and curricular materials as needed, and by providing networking opportunities for international and local experts.

The workshop included formation of a curriculum committee charged with creating a national ophthalmic medical personnel curriculum and moving towards developing a certifying exam. Discussions are also underway for international accreditation.

Dr. Babar Qureshi, Chair of the ICO Task Force for Uncorrected Refractive Error and CEO of the Comprehensive Health and Education Forum (CHEF) International, invited the ICO and the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology to participate in the workshop, which was supported by the ICOFoundation and the Pakistan Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences.
