The ICO has added several new ICO-Ophthalmology Surgical Competency Assessment Rubric (OSCAR) tools to its resources for educators and learners. The ICO-OSCAR is a standardized, internationally valid tool for the educator (and the resident) to objectively evaluate competence in performing a specific procedure.

"Having the ability to assess an ophthalmologist’s competence in performing surgery is a critical component of teaching," said Dr. Karl Golnik, ICO Director for Education.

ICO-OSCARs (www.icoph.org/ICO-OSCAR) are available for: extracapsular cataract extraction, lateral tarsal strip, phacoemulsification, strabismus, and small-incision cataract surgery. The ICO-OSCARs and the Ophthalmic Clinical Evaluation Exercise (OCEX), a tool to evaluate resident competence in patient care, are available in the ICO’s Center for Ophthalmic Educators.  Selected ICO-OSCARs are available in Spanish, Chinese, and Portuguese.

"The ICO is interested in hearing from people who have used the ICO-OSCARS or can translate them into additional languages," said Dr. Golnik.  "Please email educators@icoph.org if you can help."
