The ICO Board of Trustees voted to accept the proposal of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (OSSA) to host the 2020 World Ophthalmology Congress® (WOC) in Cape Town, South Africa. The selection of the host is provisional, pending definition and approval by ICO and OSSA of an Agreement on Expectations for WOC2020, which is anticipated later this year.

In October 2014, ICO Member societies in the Middle East/Africa region were invited to submit proposals to host WOC2020. The ICO reviewed materials received based on predetermined critical considerations and sent the leading proposals to the Board of Trustees for review at the May 14, 2015, Board meeting in Milan, Italy.

At the Milan Board meeting, there were presentations from each of the three finalist ICO Member societies bidding: the Emirates Ophthalmic Society, the Oman Ophthalmic Society, and OSSA, followed by a Board vote on provisional selection of the host and venue.

"The ICO looks forward to working with OSSA to organize the first WOC in Africa in 2020," said Dr. Hugh Taylor, ICO President.

The WOC is held in a different region every two years. WOC2016, hosted by the Mexican Society of Ophthalmology and co-hosted by the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, will be February 5–9, 2016, in Guadalajara, Mexico. The 2018 WOC will be hosted by the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology (Sociedad Española de Oftalmología–SEO) June 16–19, 2018, in Barcelona, Spain.
