ICO Advocates Global Ban on Consumer Fireworks

The ICO has called for a global ban on consumer fireworks. The ICO position paper, which was endorsed by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and the International Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Council (IPOSC), encourages ophthalmologists and national ophthalmology societies to advocate for a ban on consumer fireworks by their governments as a strategy to prevent unnecessary blindness and visual impairment from firework-related injuries.

Eye injuries related to consumer use of fireworks is a global problem, and as many as half of those affected are children, with one third of eye injuries from fireworks resulting in permanent blindness. Download the ICO position paper here:
