WOC 2010 participants from Sub-Saharan Africa were invited to join together at a meeting and reception of the African Ophthalmology Forum (AOF) June 6 (2010) in Berlin, made possible with support from Alcon.
A group of 80 assembled to meet and discuss the future of the AOF and how to empower ophthalmologists in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Bruce Spivey of the ICO and Dr. Abdulaziz AlRajhi of the MEACO, two organizations that have supported the formation of the AOF, started off the evening with advice and motivation. Edward Legodi, MD, AOF Vice President; Henry N’Kumbe, MD, AOF Secretary; and Kunle Hassan, MD, AOF President; shared more specific details on the AOF and our future. Dan Kiage, MD, AOF Vice President, moderated what turned out to be a lively discussion on how the group can move forward together.
The following day, the newly created ICO Advisory Group on Sub-Saharan Africa also met for the first time. This group will collaborate with the AOF and aims to suggest ways that the ICO, European ophthalmological societies and others can support efforts in Sub-Saharan Africa. This new Advisory Group has members in common with the AOF and the two plan to work closely together.
