ICO Considers Guadalajara, Mexico for WOC 2016

Posted on June 21, 2010
Topic: World Ophthalmology Congress
Region: Central & South America

At its meeting in Berlin, the ICO Board of Trustees conditionally approved Guadalajara, the second largest city in Mexico, as the site for 2016 World Ophthalmology Congress® (WOC), to be hosted by the Mexican Society of Ophthalmology.

The selection of Guadalajara and the Mexican Society of Ophthalmology was made on a provisional basis. To increase continuity from one WOC to the next, the ICO will be playing a much greater role in planning and managing the WOCs. For this reason, the selection will be confirmed once the ICO and the host have agreed on a set of “expectations” for the WOC.

The ICO is enthusiastic about meeting in Guadalajara in 2016. It is an appealing cultural city (the home of Mariachis and Tequila) with excellent facilities and a great enthusiasm about the WOC. This will be the second time the Congress will be held in Mexico, with the first in 1970 in Mexico City.

As mentioned above, the 2012 WOC will be in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. WOC 2014 will be April 2¬–6 in Tokyo, and WOC 2018 will be in Europe, with the ICO Board to decide on that host and city in 2012.
