Patient Safety: a Global Priority for All

Posted on June 2, 2017
Topic: Guidelines

The ICO calls on societies and ophthalmologists around the world to support and advocate for the elimination of human suffering from errors related to eye surgery.

The ICO’s Global Call for Action to Eliminate Eye Surgical Errors recommends adherence to standard protocols and procedures by integration of safety promotion systems that involve the entire surgical team. Essential aspects of a standard checklist include preoperative verification, site marking, and a surgical pause.

Patient safety is also a priority of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). At the European Society of Ophthalmology Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on June 11, 2017, the ICO is participating in the symposium “Safety in the Clinic and OR: Improving Patient Care and Staying Out of Trouble.” Please join us in sharing experiences and insights.

The ICO’s Global Call for Action to Eliminate Eye Surgical Errors also includes links to valuable patient safety resources from the WHO and AAO.
