WORD, www.icoword.org, is an online forum and resource center to enhance residency education, with a monthly email newsletter and blog highlighting resources for teaching residents.

WORD resources focus on:

  1. What To Teach, including the ICO curriculum for residency training and other curricula, goals and objectives defined in different regions.
  2. How To Teach, including techniques that are covered in the Program Directors Course, tools for creating educational content and guidelines for lectures, case presentations, wet labs, quizzes, etc.
  3. What to Teach With, including Web sites, lectures, videos, and other materials that are useful for teaching residents.

This resource center can be used by almost every residency program, helping to solve two common problems many share: lack of subspecialists in each and every area of ophthalmology to educate residents, and lack of time to develop all the teaching/learning interventions that are desirable in residency education.

WORD is currently available in English in Spanish with some resources in Portuguese.

WORD stands for World Ophthalmic Residency Development, and was initiated by Drs. Eduardo Mayorga and Gabriela Palis as a way to connect educators after they attend the ICO's popular Residency Program Directors' Courses.
