Eye On Ophthalmic Educators

Dr. Juan Batlle is founder of the Elias Santana Residency Training Program in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Residency training at Elias Santana emphasizes the use of appropriate technology and research in prevention of blindness, including mandatory monthly outreach projects. ICO Examinations have also been incorporated into the program as part of the entry and exit requirements.

We recently talked with Dr. Batlle to learn about his thoughts on ophthalmic education. Dr. Batlle teaches ophthalmology residents and ophthalmic technicians in both the classroom and the operating room. He is particularly interested in assessments, refraction, operating room skills and access to Spanish-language written educational materials. As is often the case, one of the biggest challenges he encounters is how to verify that students have reached competency as professionals.

Do you know an outstanding educator who should be featured in the “Eye on Ophthalmic Educators”? Please submit your nominations, and tell us why you think they should be featured.
