Eye On Ophthalmic Educators

This quarter we talked with Dr. Mahesh Shanmugam, fondly known by colleagues as Dr. MPS, the head of Vitreoretinal and Ocular Oncology Services at Sankara Eye Hospitals in India. Described as an innovator, teacher and forerunner in the fields of vitreoretinal diseases and ocular oncology, his expertise includes mentoring those interested in becoming teachers themselves.

We talked with Dr. Shanmugam to learn about his thoughts on ophthalmic education. He teaches fellows in vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina, and ocular oncology. He is particularly interested in teaching in clinical settings, as well as in the operating room. One of the biggest challenges he encounters as an educator is motivating students to excel and to create goals to guide their progress in their chosen subspecialties.

Looking for Outstanding Educators

We are calling for “Eye on Ophthalmic Educators” suggestions. Do you know an outstanding educator who should be featured in the “Eye on Ophthalmic Educators” section of the ICO-OEG Quarterly? Please submit your suggestions, and tell us why you think they should be featured.
