February 25, 2018 Courses: eLearning Courses by Orbis

Orbis International has launched three new courses on their telemedicine platform, Cybersight.org. A free Cybersight.org user account is required to access the courses.

These courses combine narrative, medical art and images, and surgical videos to optimize the learning experience, with downloadable articles, guidelines and practice manuals for reference. Full blended-learning curricula are available for the courses, which allow educators and residency program directors to combine the online content with in-person hands-on skills training sessions.

The ICO is committed to improving the quality of ophthalmic training. In support of this goal, the ICO offers educators resources and tools to stay abreast of new information. 

  • The Center for Ophthalmic Educators is a key component of the ICO’s educator program, offering an array of educational tools for teachers of residents, medical students, subspecialty fellows, practicing ophthalmologists, and allied ophthalmic personnel. Educators can also share ideas and collaborate with peers through the Center’s discussion forums.

December 11, 2017 ICO 360° Assessment Tool

The article, “The International Council of Ophthalmology 360-Degree Assessment Tool: Development and Validation,” has been published in the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology.

The ICO 360° Assessment Tool is a multi-source feedback tool to assess and provide feedback to residents regarding their competence in “soft skills” such as interpersonal and communication skills and professionalism, as seen by different groups of people with whom the resident interacts (faculty, peer, allied ophthalmic personnel, and patients). This assessment was developed specifically for ophthalmology residents by the ICO Education team, and has been validated by a panel of international experts.

February 25, 2018 ICO Collaboration with the University of Utah’s Moran Eye Center

To support ophthalmic learning worldwide, the ICO and the University of Utah’s John A. Moran Eye Center are collaborating on Moran’s global teaching portal–Clinical Ophthalmology Resource for Education (CORE) International.

CORE is a collection of ophthalmic education resources and is intended to be a boundary-free, permanent learning and reference tool, at no cost to the user. The portal now closely maps the ICO Residency Curriculum offering residents, no matter their country, access to lectures related to specific curriculum goals for every year of their ophthalmology residency. CORE and the ICO are also collecting additional lectures, videos, and resources to further support the education of residents.

April 11, 2018 ICO-OSCAR Ptosis

We are excited to announce that a new ICO Ophthalmology Surgical Competency Assessment Rubric (ICO-OSCAR) for anterior approach ptosis surgery was published in the February 2018 issue of Orbit.

The ICO-OSCAR is a behavioral and skill-based rubric to teach and assess an ophthalmologist’s surgical competence. Evaluators use the rubric to objectively measure the resident’s capability in performing a specific procedure and it also provides learners with a tool to better gauge their own effectiveness.

January 22, 2018 International Residents Benefit from Collaboration

To support ophthalmic learning worldwide, the University of Utah’s John A. Moran Eye Center and the ICO have formed a new partnership.

Moran’s global teaching portal––Clinical Ophthalmology Resource for Education (CORE) International––now closely maps the ICO Residency Curriculum offering residents, no matter their country, access to lectures related to specific curriculum goals for every year of their ophthalmology residency. CORE and the ICO are also accumulating other lectures, videos, and resources to further support the education of residents.

November 27, 2017 New ICO-OSCARs for Vitrectomy and Trabeculectomy

The ICO’s Ophthalmology Surgical Competency Assessment Rubric (ICO-OSCAR) for teaching and assessing resident surgical skill provides instruction as to what is expected at each step of a surgical procedure and a method to provide specific formative feedback to the student.

Eight ICO-OSCARs are available in a multitude of translations, and the newest additions are the ICO-OSCAR for Vitrectomy, published in the September 2017 issue of Retina, and the ICO-OSCAR for Trabeculectomy, published in the September 2017 issue of the Journal of Glaucoma.

The ICO-OSCARs are recommended in the College of Ophthalmology of Eastern Central and Southern Africa (COESA) Residency Curriculum and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Milestones Document. See all ICO-OSCARs and related translations.
